So what's the deal with Walmart telling people returns are subject to "copyright reasons"?

I returned one of the $15 ones bc it was beat up in delivery- there was some confusion because the LP actually didn't have a bar code to scan- but the rep went to the back and came out and cleared it, but said something to the effect of "for copyright reasons we can't take it back, you have to keep it" but gave me my refund receipt, then stapled one to the jacket of the LP I returned.

The cashier isn’t trained/paid well enough to try to figure out whatever issue they were having with the return so they just gave you a refund and let you keep the record so they don’t have to worry about trying to add it back to the stores inventory; they just said something that sounded like they knew what they were talking about so they could wrap up your return and help the other people behind you trying to buy a cashiers check, return a lamp without a receipt, and buy some cigarettes/lottery tickets.

Well, they didn't let me keep it. And I've seen other people say the same thing about being quoted "copyright reasons" on a vinyl return. So it's coming from someone, it isn't off script

Yeah, I posted about it like 10 posts above yours

Back in the CD era, people would buy them, copy/burn them and then return the original. Places stopped taking returns on CDs as a result. My guess is that their policy says all media, not just easily copyable media.
How would that be legal? They sell you defective product and the consumer is who gets fucked? Not the giant corporations who produced or sold the defective products? This type of shit makes me want to shoplift.

This was my argument to them. I said “what if this was shattered to pieces” and he said you could get a replacement. When I told him it was sold out, they changed their tune.

Weird thing is they kept saying it wasn’t their policy, but a federal one. The electronics guy told them it was fine though which was the final say. I got a little snippy at the beginning because of how they were approaching the issue, but we smoothed it out in the end.

Definitely not a federal issue at all. Yeah, you could get replacements back in the day but not refunds unless it was sold out/not available.

This is bizarre. There’s no federal copyright issue or any other federal issue with returning music in physical form. The ability to copy what’s on the disc is irrelevant unless an actual illegal copy was made and, even then, the copyright violation is irrelevant to the return of the disc. In theory, the copyright holder is entitled to pursue a copyright claim regardless of whether the disc is returned, and none of that has anything to do w the retailer.

As w the CD example above, this federal/copyright issue is a subterfuge, BS excuse for Walmart’s shitty return policy.

so wm is giving people sh*t when trying to return unopened vinyl from online orders, i thought you just brought back what ever items from the online order & they give you a barcode on your phone for the cashier to scan not much convo needed?

Looks like they either sold a lot more this bfrsd or ordered a lot less. Either way, I'm gonna still hold out on the other titles I'm interested in. I know they'll drop eventually.

The $15 shipping, while still making it a good deal, saved me from myself too. I'm a cheap ass with shipping costs and it makes no logical sense.
I ended up getting 4 records shipped for $50. Mostly presents for people.

YDD does always have really expensive shipping but their prices are often good enough to offset it if you grab a few items.

I’m still surprised the Alternate Fleetwood Mac vinyl box set was only $115 there.
