Pre-Order Thread

I streamed a couple of these last night. The Doobie Brothers are like a shitier Steely Dan, which isn't possible so they're also better than Steely Dan. It's a paradox.

The Rundgren was an ok listen.
I already own a Rhino pressing of the Ramones it’s fantastic. The Chicago and Doobie Brothers are Yacht Rock staples but these are garage sale staples and I would feel weird paying more than $5 for a copy of those.

The thing that interested me in the Ramones album is that this one is the mono mix.
Not sure if the mono mix is better or not than the stereo, but I do like it. It’s really in your face and has a tougher sound. The hard panned stereo is what I’m used to though and I think the way they intended it to sound when released since Sire wouldn’t allow a mono mix. They were going for that hard panned stereo sound of early Beatles and girl band records. Both are valid. I reach for the rhino stereo more but the mono box is a fun listen. I think you need both if you’re a big fan of the record.

I'm old. That first side of the Doobies Minute By Minute brings me back to my childhood. I may dig it out and spin it now.

I'm old too (quite a bit older, I'm guessing) and I summon all demons from hell to retrieve every known copy of this record and employ them as the torture device they were meant to be. That's just my overly dramatic opinion, of course. All music is good in the ear of the right beholder.

They’re Granddad Rock now

Hey buddy - I'm a double Granddad and I'm seeing Dinosaur Jr in a 400-capacity club Sunday night.

I think both bands fell prey to frontmen that steered them away from their original vision. After Tom Johnston left The Doobies, the remainders let Michael McDonald run roughshod. I'm sure the fact they were getting airplay and selling tons of records made it more palatable. Same for Chicago. Terry Kath's influence on the band was waning with V (he only had one of his song's included on the record) and Peter Cetera laid down the same Michael McDonald effect shortly after.

That said, of these records, Chicago V is closer to their original concept than The Doobies Minute By Minute.

China Grove still rocks in my opinion. But just on principle, if I needed a copy of The Captain And Me I would buy it used.

I always felt 'Without You' would've been just as big as 'China Grove' if it had been the single.
