I didn’t realize Jonathan Demme discovered her when she was driving taxis. She picked him up one day, not knowing who he was, and played him her demo tape. Then she ended up having music in 4 of his films including that famous scene
Wow, that's pretty crazy - I know nothing about her besides that song. I've had my eye out for that single since I started collecting and have never seen it - I know it sells for like $500 now.

I'll have to check out that documentary, seems like she had a pretty interesting life!

Love this band!

From the upcoming compilation "Early Singles: 1981-1982" out on Sacred Bones Records on March 8, 2024. Original live audio recording from Nosferatu Festival 1982.

That same year, the band performed in London as support for the Cocteau Twins; it was the platform they needed to ricochet into the arms of the ripped fishnet masses. Early Singles (1981-1982), is a map of the foundational movements of Xmal Deutschland, just seconds before takeoff. Bonus tracks on the compilation, “Kaelbermarsch” and a gritty live version of “Allein,” further accentuate their fusion of toughness with the quixotic decadence of atmospheric synthesizers. The band’s pursuit of something greater is palpable with this release, a reflection of a time that introduced accessibility to new means of making music following the onset of punk.
