On 6th December, 4AD will release their first pressing of Fordlândia by Jóhann Jóhannsson. Initially released in 2008, this edition is complete with previously unpublished album notes written by the much-missed composer.
Originally released just as Jóhann’s star was rising in the world of modern composition, Fordlândia is a beautiful meld of strings and electronics, with two themes running throughout; “This album is like a film with two separate story lines that at first don´t seem to have a lot to do with each other, but actually they do,” said Jóhann at the time.
The idea of failed utopias is the main thread, with the album’s title is a reference to the Fordlândia rubber plantation in Brazil that Henry Ford built with grand plans in the mid-1920s but abandoned after a mere eight years at a huge cost and without a single tire for one of his cars having been produced. The collision of mysticism and rocket science is the other theme explored – made apparent by song titles such as ‘The Rocket Builder (Lo Pan!)’ and ‘Melodia (Guidelines for a Space Propulsion Device Based on Heim’s Quantum Theory)’ – a topic Jóhann was fascinated by at the time of writing this album, keenly studying the leftfield works of John Whiteside Parsons and Burkhard Heim.

Previously only available on vinyl as a small run pressed by Jóhann himself on his NTOV label, this new pressing comes spread across two 180g pieces of black vinyl and is housed in a beautiful gatefold sleeve. This pressing has been mastered by Bo Kondren at Calyx and the artwork has been adapted from his original design by Chris Bigg.

This looks very cool.

This also illustrates my point that you can issue a quality pressing double album at a good price.

It is not necessary to charge $30-$35 for a single album.

Our 25th anniversary release! 22 Chicago artists running the spectrum of classic country, bluegrass, rockabilly, folk, and rock-n-roll! All never-before-released tracks!

Featuring Robbie Fulks, The Handsome Family, Kelly Hogan, Jon Langford's Hillbilly Lovechild (with Steve Albini), Brendan Kelly (of The Lawrence Arms), ROOKIE, Big Sadie, Half Gringa, and more!
Bloodshot Records was born in 1994 with the release of its first album, the scene-capturing compilation For A Life of Sin: Insurgent Chicago Country. For our 25th anniversary, we wanted to come back home to shine a light, once again, on Chicago—ever-changing, ever-vibrant, ever-on-the-make—to champion the storytellers who keep the city a vital place. While the metropolis is too motley to have a signature sound, it does have a signature hustle, the hope-against-hope drive that a small-timer can beat it past the big shots and catch a break. No matter what may change, move on, or get bulldozed, as long as the city IS, that spark will never be snuffed out. Someone or something will always be here to fan it.
Bloodshot Records is undeniably and proudly a product of that Chicago hope and hustle. As the label’s home, the diverse city has shaped its personality, its sound, and its surrounding scene. A communion of ideas between local artists and purveyors at venues, record shops, bars & restaurants, and numerous independent organizations inspires a certain quirky, inclusive, salt-of-the-earth spirit.
Too Late to Pray: Defiant Chicago Roots is a redux of For A Life of Sin. It is a current magnifying-glass look at some—but not even close to all—of the artists and groups making unique and special music in the city’s roots scene. Some of the artists you may have heard of; some are woven so tightly into the fabric of the city, it’s hard to imagine a time without them; some we’ve claimed, whether they like it or not, as natives; some you might be hearing for the first time; and some you may never hear from again.

Robbie Fulks, Freakwater, Jon Langford’s Hillbilly Lovechild (featuring Steve Albini), and the The Handsome Family return in resplendent form from their contributions on For A Life of Sin and maintain their unchallenged status as guardians of the traditional guard. Other featured artists are just as well-regarded in their accomplished tenure and we are now fortunate enough to release some of their exceptional music: Tammi Savoy, The Hoyle Brothers, Brendan Kelly, Lawrence Peters, and The Western Elstons. Some we have worked with before in other forms (Bethany Thomas & Tawny Newsome of Jon Langford’s Four Lost Souls, Joybird’s Jess McIntosh); some have interned and worked at Bloodshot (The Dyes, Kelly Hogan); others are more recent trailblazers of the scene and are driving it in exciting, new directions (ROOKIE, Wild Earp, Big Sadie, David Quinn, The Family Gold, Sima Cunningham of OHMME, Saluda Moonlighters, Los Gallos).
Too Late To Pray is one big Chicago family affair.

The voice of Afrofuturistic science non-fiction! Undoubtedly the most sublime constellation in the Sun Ra cosmos, June Tyson’s voice is the perfect guide through one of the most challenging and varied musical legacies ever to be encountered. Capable of strong, fierce, and emotive vocalizations as well as intricate weavings, her voice transcends genre. This first ever collection affirming June Tyson’s unassailable gravity in Sun Ra’s realm is pressed on gold vinyl at Third Man Pressing and features previously unissued cuts and includes a full color zine-style insert featuring rare photos and extensive liner notes!
The strong, powerful, & fiercely feminine voice of Sun Ra’s Arkestra for decades was the strong, sassy, & spacey June Tyson. As Sun Ra’s closest companion throughout his time on Earth, she represented Afrofuturism as boldly and powerfully as her Saturnic leader. He the king of Afrofuturism and she the queen. The zine style insert is externally a replica of one of June’s personal items, her “Dream Book”; open the composition pad to unveil stunning unseen photos courtesy of June’s daughters and a powerful set of notes from Cat Celebreze.

The Raincoats debut (1979) album immortalized the band as the beginning of the London-based post-punk explosion and later adopted as the "Godmothers of Grunge" in the 90s. Now remastered and pressed on translucent orange vinyl to celebrate the 40th Anniversary!

For some reason, I keep seeing her name and keep thinking of Ashly Burch and Tiny Tina then pops into my head

SOLO DEBUT FROM THE ARTIST KNOWN AS SESSA, co-founder of Brazilian psych band Garotas Suecas. Sessa is a scene fixture in both São Paulo and NYC, and Grandeza ('greatness' em Português) was recorded with a diverse cast of musicians in both locales, an homage to Brazil's rich musical history: “Grandeza is an album about the natural gesture of love and the softness of the human body. It’s also about my love for Brazilian music and its many shapes and colors. I like to think that it exists somewhere among the rituals that celebrate life. It’s a reminder that amongst all the pain, music comes to reaffirm the beauty in living.” The album’s eleven tracks are vivid and beautifully minimal; Sessa takes his time deploying a vast array of textures that pay tribute to a half century of Brazilian music without sacrificing his personality as its centerpiece. The title track is a sparse folk tune pairing Sessa’s charismatic vocal with back room acoustic guitar; next up “Tesão Central” sees polyrhythmic congas cascadeing into a choir of female chants in a wash of analog delay. The vintage Nascimento / Jobim / Valle vibe is deployed flawlessly, but the record has a few tells that place it in the present century: “Flor do Real” is vaguely reggaeton despite its homely kitchen floor recording quality; “Orgia” is a deliberate deconstruction of post-Tropicalia aesthetics. “Infinitamente Nu” is our favorite track, delightfully squirmy with a devastating coalescence of moody strings and voices, like some kind of kindred spirit to Low or Sigur Ros’ noisier moments. Lab exclusive pressing on cream colored vinyl, includes full color printed insert with lyrics in Portuguese and English, 100 copies only.
