Rank The Albums!

I've listened to Cocteau Twins in the past but I feel like I've barely listened to any albums outside of Treasure and Heaven or Las Vegas even though my last.fm says otherwise. I decided to "get more into them" this year, so I'm taking a stab at this. I have a feeling this changes over time.

  1. Heaven or Las Vegas
  2. Treasure
  3. Head Over Heels
  4. Blue Bell Knoll
  5. Victorialand
  6. The Moon and the Melodies
  7. Garlands
  8. Four Calendar Cafe
  9. Milk & Kisses
I don't think any of their albums are necessarily bad, just some less enjoyable than others.

With Dream Theater's new album release this past Friday, their 16th LP, Parasomnia, and the subsequent return of original drummer, Mike Portnoy, I figured I would rank their albums.

16. The Astonishing (2016)
15. When Dream and Day Unite (1989)
14. Distance Over Time (2019)
13. A View From The Top Of The World (2021)
12. s/t (2013)
11. Parasomnia (2025)
10. Systematic Chaos (2007)
9. Black Clouds & Silver Linings (2009)
8. Falling Into Infinity (1997)
7. A Dramatic Turn Of Events (2011)
6. Octavarium (2005)
5. Train Of Thought (2003)
4. Awake (1994)
3. Images and Words (1992)
2. Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence (2002)
1. Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory (1999)

With Steven Wilson's new solo LP, The Overview, dropping yesterday, and being now 3 full listens in, I figured I would rank his 8 solo LPs:

8. The Future Bites (2021)
7. To The Bone (2017)
6. The Overview (2025)
5. The Harmony Codex (2023)
4. Insurgentes (2008)
3. Grace For Drowning (2011)
2. Hand. Cannot. Erase. (2015)
1. The Raven That Refused To Sing (And Other Stories) (2013)

I'd fiddle with 5-8 a little, but full agree on 1-4.

The first 5 on this list, I listen to regularly. Blue Bell Knoll and Treasure very often. So I went back to relisten to all the albums - here's my ranking:

1. Blue Bell Knoll
2. Treasure
3. Heaven or Las Vegas
4. Milk & Kisses
5. Four Calendar Cafe
4. The Moon and the Melodies
7. Victorialand
8. Head Over Heels
9. Garlands

I think Milk & Kisses is severely underated IMO - its so beautiful. Half-Gifts is probably one of my favorite songs of theirs. I actually even prefer it to Heaven or Las Vegas sometimes.

Yeah I’m okay with that. If I revised my list I’d probably move Garlands to the bottom. It’s not bad, just feels like one of the same for that time period. They really break into their own with Head Over Heels. Milk & Kisses might move up a little bit but I’d also drop Victorialand to second bottom followed by Moon as 3rd bottom. I love Harold Budd but it feels more like a CT song followed by a HB song and alternating through the album. It doesn’t feel as collaborative as it could be.

Revised Cocteau Twins:
  1. Heaven or Las Vegas
  2. Treasure
  3. Head Over Heels
  4. Blue Bell Knoll
  5. Four Calendar Cafe
  6. Milk & Kisses
  7. The Moon and the Melodies
  8. Victorialand
  9. Garlands

Since I've invested some time evaluating the new MMJ studio album:

Evil Urges
Z
It Still Moves
Circuital
Is
At Dawn
Tennessee Fire
S/T
The Waterfall / The Waterfall II [honestly I'm just trying to forget these even exist]

This is an interesting list! I always hear that evil urges is one of their worst albums, and that the first waterfall is one of their best!

I never thought it would happen, but a friend played me White Pepper and I feel like I finally understand ween. Would love to see anyone’s album rankings for them as I’m exploring the discography.
Ha! It’s funny you say that because White Pepper was the first Ween album I ever purchased (way back in high school on CD).

I would recommend checking out Chocolate & Cheese, The Mollusk, and 12 Golden Country Greats (in that order) next. Pure Guava is excellent too but it’s a bit more abrasive (and weird) than those other 3.

It is pretty mid in comparison to their earlier studio albums but @Viking Dan will die on this “Evil Urges is MMJ’s best” hill.

 Evil Urges is All Killer No Filler.
And Remnants alone kicks sand in face of and steals the girlfriend of both Tennessee Fire and At Dawn upon arrival.

We can debate It Still Moves, Z and Circuital - and I posit that your preferences here depends on what kind of band you want your MMJ to be. As I've said before, I want my MMJ Wrapped in a Cape, Bug-eyed sunglassed to the hilt and as funky as I can get.
