I'd fiddle with 5-8 a little, but full agree on 1-4.With Steven Wilson's new solo LP, The Overview, dropping yesterday, and being now 3 full listens in, I figured I would rank his 8 solo LPs:
8. The Future Bites (2021)
7. To The Bone (2017)
6. The Overview (2025)
5. The Harmony Codex (2023)
4. Insurgentes (2008)
3. Grace For Drowning (2011)
2. Hand. Cannot. Erase. (2015)
1. The Raven That Refused To Sing (And Other Stories) (2013)
5-7 are interchangeable right now. But I feel TFB is his weakest solo albumI'd fiddle with 5-8 a little, but full agree on 1-4.
The first 5 on this list, I listen to regularly. Blue Bell Knoll and Treasure very often. So I went back to relisten to all the albums - here's my ranking:I've listened to Cocteau Twins in the past but I feel like I've barely listened to any albums outside of Treasure and Heaven or Las Vegas even though my last.fm says otherwise. I decided to "get more into them" this year, so I'm taking a stab at this. I have a feeling this changes over time.
I don't think any of their albums are necessarily bad, just some less enjoyable than others.
- Heaven or Las Vegas
- Treasure
- Head Over Heels
- Blue Bell Knoll
- Victorialand
- The Moon and the Melodies
- Garlands
- Four Calendar Cafe
- Milk & Kisses
Yeah I’m okay with that. If I revised my list I’d probably move Garlands to the bottom. It’s not bad, just feels like one of the same for that time period. They really break into their own with Head Over Heels. Milk & Kisses might move up a little bit but I’d also drop Victorialand to second bottom followed by Moon as 3rd bottom. I love Harold Budd but it feels more like a CT song followed by a HB song and alternating through the album. It doesn’t feel as collaborative as it could be.The first 5 on this list, I listen to regularly. Blue Bell Knoll and Treasure very often. I think Milk & Kisses is severely underated IMO - its so beautiful. Half-Gifts is probably one of my favorite songs of theirs. I actually even prefer it to Heaven or Las Vegas sometimes.
Definitely! it’s still a solid 7/10 album, which is fine, they have plenty of good to great to incredible albums. 1-4 on the revised list are all at least 9/10 albums.Yea I don't dislike any of their albums. Garlands sounds a bit rough but I like songs from it for sure
Since I've invested some time evaluating the new MMJ studio album:
Evil Urges
Z
It Still Moves
Circuital
Is
At Dawn
Tennessee Fire
S/T
The Waterfall / The Waterfall II [honestly I'm just trying to forget these even exist]
It is pretty mid in comparison to their earlier studio albums but @Viking Dan will die on this “Evil Urges is MMJ’s best” hill. This is an interesting list! I always hear that evil urges is one of their worst albums, and that the first waterfall is one of their best!
Ha! It’s funny you say that because White Pepper was the first Ween album I ever purchased (way back in high school on CD).I never thought it would happen, but a friend played me White Pepper and I feel like I finally understand ween. Would love to see anyone’s album rankings for them as I’m exploring the discography.
