September 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge - 'Cause you can't, you won't, and you don't stop!

Day 22: "Dogs love me cause I’m crazy sniffable, I bet you never knew I got the ill peripheral."

Fleetwood Mac - Tusk

As for the “Tusk” album cover art, that little dog biting at some unseen person’s leg is a shot of Scooter — engineer producer Ken Caillat’s dog — and his leg, he said.

“My dog is biting my leg,” he said of the image that also appears on the cover of his book about “Tusk.” “I think they only liked it because they could see his canine.”

Ohtis - Curve Of The Earth

I chose this album due to the puppers on the front cover and the doggo in the music video but Ohtis are pretty excellent band. They are from Central IL and I used to go to their shows and drink beers with Sam and Adam on occasion. They are a couple of really good and talented dudes that were making quality Indie Rock before they were old enough to drive. Eventually the band kinda faded away because Sam had a pretty major drug problem and Adam moved away and joined a few other groups. after a decade long struggle Sam got clean and Adam put the band back together and this excellent album was the result.

Day 21: "Everybody getting’ down, make no mistake. Nothing sounds quite like an 808."

Rick James – Cold Blooded

From How the TR-808 drum machine added the low end to modern music.

For his 1983 album Cold Blooded, he went for a less guitar driven and stripped down sound. On the title track, he created the drum section using the Roland TR-808 drum machine. The backing beat is a bare bones rhythm with just the right amount of swing to bring out the funk. As the song moves along, little stabs of synthesizer, rhythm guitar, and bass are scattered throughout to fill in the gaps. Overall it’s the interplay between Rick’s vocal arrangements and the 808 drums that really help to carry the song.

During the time he wrote “Cold Blooded”, Rick was dating actress Linda Blair (who is best known for her role as the possessed child Regan in the 1973 movie The Exorcist). While hanging at his studio one time, Rick decided to show Linda how he comes up with his music. He ended up laying down the drums, bass, synths, and more for what would eventually become the backing track for “Cold Blooded”. He also took inspiration from his relationship with Linda for the lyrics to this song. One particular incident that is said to have influenced the theme of the song is when Rick got Linda pregnant and she had an abortion without his knowledge. In his biography, GLOW, he said that the song “was about how Linda could freeze [his] blood”.

Day 23: “Let me get some action from the back section, we need body rockin’ not perfection. Let your backbone flip but don’t slip a disc, let your spine unwind just take a risk.”

The forgotten band of the early power pop movement. What a great song...

Automagik "Fluorescent Nights" (2020 Soul Step)
I'm going to interpret this prompt as referring to deep cuts that can make you dance. Which brings me to this lesser-known synthpop gem from 2020. Fun music. Spine unwinding guaranteed.

Love the slow burn on Dance Yrself Clean. Then when it finally hits, it hits with abandon.

A lot of groovy/funky tracks on this comp, but that line & song stick out to me in particular!

Olatunji – Drums! Drums! Drums!

Seven of the nine musicians on this album are drummers/percussionists and one of the two sax/flute players is also credited with playing drums. I'd say that is quite a lot of action from the back section indeed!

The sax/flute players featured here happen to be Pat Patrick (who gets the drum credit as well) and Marshall Allen of Sun Ra's Arkestra, a group known to take the odd risk from time to time. ;)

Day 24: “If you try to knock me you’ll get mocked, I’ll stir fry you in my wok. Your knees will start shaking and your fingers pop, like a pinch on the neck from Mr. Spock.”

Queen - Greatest Hits

In my mind, fingers pop equates to snapping fingers. And my favorite finger snaps of all time are at the beginning of Killer Queen.

The Beastie Boys - Ill Communication

Let me start out by saying had I read ahead I probably woulda saved yesterday’s record (the one that contains the song “Death of Mr. Spock”) for today.

The Beastie Boys are fucking cool but also giant fucking nerds. They’ve dropped multiple bars over their career referencing science fiction including several clever Star Trek lines. I decided to play this today because it contains “Sabotage” the song that JJ Abrams returned the favor and included the track as a major plot point during the climax in Star Trek Beyond.
