sleater-kinney is dead; long live (the) sleater-kinney (thread)

I read the Stereogum piece, but I haven't read the actual interview. Carrie comes off as pretty uppity with that one quote. Janet choosing to not respond is interesting to me, as is the nugget that she is the one that pushed for St. Vincent to produce. I just assumed that Carrie had pushed for that.

The article did not make me blame CB any less for this.

A fucking sitcom, CB? Get bent.

Have been keep tabs on this news and seeing that they were trying to make a show about how the band got started is....odd to say the least. That show not happening pushing them to make music again sure is something too.

I feel Janet Weiss is being her best self right now. Playing Rainbow Connection with Kermit and Jim James yesterday, going on tour with her band. Shes not trying to push a story or anything, shes just being herself.

SK have been trying not to shake any cages and keep the roll out of their album as smooth as possible, but they seem to be trying to get the high ground since Janet left. Who really knows though.

Ditto. And it feels so gross to me to say that. I've loved them so much for so long.

They need to announce their new drummer soon. And I really really really really (x infinity) hope they do not choose Fred.
Wouldn't them choosing Fred ruin that quote they gave about women picking up the pieces and going on that they gave when this first started?

It would have to be a woman I assume.

So there wasn't anything new about the tour drummer in the interview/piece? I'm sure they are in scramble mode. If Janet leaving was actually as abrupt as it seems to us fans, I could see Carrie and Corin being a bit salty. I just doubt that it was an out of nowhere decision. Perhaps there is more insight to that in the interview.

I would assume and hope that it is a woman, as well. But.... we're in strange times.

It seems like Janet was absent for a portion of the recording. And the article says they sought band counseling before Janet decided to leave. Nothing in the article about a new drummer.

"Corin and I started this band and we’ll end it." <-- maybe it's best to just roll as a duo and use tour/studio drummers?

Maybe that's just sour grapes on Carrie's part, but it doesn't seem like a very equitable situation for a quality drummer hoping to be a permanent member.

Bummed to hear the pilot didn’t get picked up. I was contacted to provide some era accurate kaos logos and show posters for it.

How cool! I don't like the thought of making Janet's journey into the band into a comedy. It seems disrespectful. But the logos and posters and then having "characters" from the scene appear in the show would have been awesome. Maybe as more of a drama.

I think I said, "Fuck you" out loud at that point in the article. It is such an unnecessarily demeaning thing to say.

After reading the interview, I actually feel like Carrie and Corin explained themselves pretty well. It would have been a more balanced piece if Janet had provided her side of things, but, she declined to do so. That one quote about it being Carrie and Corin that will end it still doesn't really sit well with me, but, in the context of the entire interview, it didn't feel quite as sensational or eyebrow raising to me as it did in the Stereogum piece. I think it is also important to keep in mind that it sounds like the follow-up interview was done shortly after the announcement from Janet, and that, according to the writer, Carrie and Corin were pretty down about it all. Now, they could have been more down because their album roll out and tour plans had just gotten effed up big time, but it sounds like they were genuinely caught off guard. Perhaps they weren't catching some hints and clues from Janet? I dunno. None of us do.

Still a bummer all around though.

My understanding was that it was about a group of teens who start a riot grrl band. So, more inspired by SK than like, the actual story of them, but they wanted to keep it era specific. CB was writing and directing the pilot. That’s all I really remember.

I read the full interview, and this is the section that jumped at me:

"There is a personal cost of being in a band, especially when each member has a very different economic reality: Brownstein a celebrity, Tucker a working mum, Weiss developing a new career."

They also insist that the breakup was not acrimonious; just terrible timing.

Yep. I mean, to give her the benefit of the doubt, maybe her intent was solidarity with Corin. But still, not a great quote to have out there for a variety of reasons (including a reconciliation, which I was holding out hope for).

Lots of feelings about this. Not logically put but just random.

-I think the power dynamic in the band shifted coming back because Carrie had a tv show and is a recognizable celebrity. It doesn’t feel like the three members were on equal footing anymore and that Carrie was the lead now. That hasn’t sat well with me.

-I am so thrilled to see Janet move on from this and I can’t wait for what comes next. I wish that Quasi tour would come to Houston. I’m not disappointed that she won’t comment or drag this out further. S-K is just as much her legacy as it is Carrie and Corin’s. Her jumping in on all of this has the possibility of damaging it. I do not want to read back and forth drama about one of my favorite bands. Janet leaving was already painful enough. I hope Carrie and Corin do not elaborate any further and try to keep it classy.

-I would really like to speak to these fans calling St. Vincent “Yoko Ono.” It’s a convo that won’t go well for them.

-I didn’t know that Corin had a job outside of S-K. I had read an interview a while back where Janet talked about having to get back into a job after the first run of S-K. I’m not sure if that part of reality is discussed enough with indie musicians. It’s unglamorous but real life.

I’m ready for the album to see where we are at.
