Strange Musical Tales: The September 2023 Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread

Day 4 - LOVECRAFT COUNTRY (Matt Ruff, 2016)
Lovecraft’s stories have influenced a lot of science-fiction, horror, and fantasy, but the elephant in the room is that he was known to have racist beliefs. As a response to this, various authors have reappropriated the cosmic horror themes and ideas from his works into empowering storylines. Examples of this are Matt Ruff’s Lovecraft Country (which was also adapted into an HBO series) and Victor LaValle’s The Ballad Of Black Tom.
Play something empowering and/or something by a black artist.

Aretha Franklin - Young, Gifted, and Black

This promo copy I bought for $10 seems to sell for $100 on discogs now even though I can't really find anything special with it

Day 7 - REVIVAL (Tim Seely & Mike Norton, 2012)
Comic series centered around the idea of the dead coming back to life in a small Wisconsin town, and the investigation into why this is occurring, along with the religious zealots that latch on the phenomenon and the media and government response.

(1977 Celluloid; late 90's reissue)
"Zombie" is a critique of military dictatorship governments, so two tentacles.

Ok, I'm killing the above play and bringing it back as the CD. A zombie revenant? Makes sense to me. Anyway, that pressing is awful... silibant as hell and no bass whatsoever. This is more like it. I guess this album needs a proper vinyl reissue.

Those Knitting Factory Fela reissues are pretty solid and affordable. They are pressed at GZ but I have three of them and haven’t had any issues.

Do they have one of Zombie? I didn't see it on the album page.... unless it has to do with the track listing of my copy. It also doesn't have the correct tracks on it (it has Monkey Banana and Everything Scatter on the other side instead of Mr Follow Follow). I'll check again - there's probably another listing with the different versions with the correct tracklist.

I concur about Knitting Factory. Their Fela remasters have been fantastic. I collected them on CD when they were coming out that way during the early 2010's. If they were able to press them properly, they would sound great. These are part of the CD's I haven't put into storage and remain in the listening room.

Hmmm, I guess I just assumed they had.

Edit: Looks like they have reissued it. Maybe it’s currently OOP but it looks like there is still some in the wild at retail…

Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard Of Ozz

I just played this album for last month’s challenge but it fits the theme so well; with “Crazy Train” and “Blizzard”, I had to spin it again. Also, as much as I enjoy Black Sabbath, I think I would take any Randy Rhoads Ozzy Solo album over any Sabbath record. They are just so much fun.
