That Escalated Quickly (aka Common Records Turned Rare)

I sold my copy back in October 2019 (weirdly it isnt showing in the 'last sold' history even though there is one from 2018) for £80 plus postage which was at the higher end of sold at the time. I was glad for the shelf space as well, that thing was chunky!
I have no idea how the discogs last sold thing works...because I have purchased things for all-time lows that were never registered. My UGK hasn't registered either but I think that's because I haven't paid the fees yet. Wonder if it doesn't register if you haven't received feedback or something?

I lucked out selling my UGK. The guy who bought it from me happened to live 10 minutes away and he had a car, so he swung by my apartment and I handed it to him through his window like some sort of sketchy drug deal haha.

The other album that really surprises me in how much it has risen in value is the Inside Llewyn Davis soundtrack. That thing sat at around $16 for the longest time and I love the soundtrack and movie but figured it would always stay around that price so I never grabbed a copy. They even had a promotion where they sold it for $5.98 as if it had been released at the time period from the movie. A copy of that $6 version recently sold for $150.

I have no idea why so many releases are skyrocketing in price in the past few months. The Buyer's Clubs thing is probably part of it...Maybe with more people working from home, they took the time to organize their collections and started buying up all the cheap copies/started jacking up prices? I was going through my collection pulling things out to sell and some records that I know were selling for $30 or so last year are now selling for $100+. I do seem to notice a lot of similar names of people who just post all their records for insane prices ($300+ for albums who have copies available for $30) so that in the case all other copies sell out, theirs might get purchased.

This is one I was after for ages. Its weird as when it does pop-up on ebay theres no real interest in them, but as you said its likely the discogs is the Buyers Club thing. I managed to get a copy for £5 as the only bid last year. I really want to get the 'Another Day, Another Time: Celebrating The Music Of "Inside Llewyn Davis"' but that only have 2 for sale starting at £328.....

I remember it constantly being on the reddit deals thread which made me not pick it up and now I regret it haha. That comp is awesome too and another one I slept on...

What I dont understand about Discogs is that there are variants that you can buy direct from the artists/labels for Retail prices but Discogs sale price/value is well above that.

For example, I bought this Elliot Smith from Bong Load for retail price ($35ish), but it was going in the $100s on Discogs.
Now it's sold out, so I kind of understand where it is valued now.

Also, you can buy this Pete Yorn release direct from the artist for $30, so who is paying $50 through Discogs for it?
Maybe it's a buyers club situation previously mentioned in this thread.

I think sometimes that is a product of people not even knowing that a record might be available from an artist/directly after the price shoots up, especially if they do a lot of their buying on Discogs. I was humming and hawing over a $50 Feist record last fall before I realized it was still available for $20 on her website. Sometimes you see people in the comments pointing out that you can still avoid flippers in these situations, but not always.

I just figure if you are internet savvy enough to be utilizing Discogs to source your vinyl habit, you are savvy enough to take the 3 minutes it takes to google the artist/label's shop to see if you can buy direct from them.

But maybe I'm giving people too much credit.

When did you manage to get an OG 2LP bongload copy of figure 8? I’m sure it wasn’t recently...

This happens a LOT. Some people simply forget to check places other than discogs. It seems like there are wanted posts on r/vinylcollectors multiple times a week where people are looking for something and it's readily available on bandcamp, a store, the band's shop or ebay at original retail.

It happens with a lot of "audiophile" releases too. Music Matters, for example, still has stuff available on their site that people are paying $100+ for on discogs or ebay. I found out about a facebook vinyl auction group the other week and watched some of the live-stream auction last night. The way it works is the guy is live-streaming video, will hold up a record and talk about it, what press it is, what the grading is, etc and people comment to bid. I was amazed that he was showing stuff like MoFi which is still available to buy in shops and people were paying $100+ for it! Or they were paying $50-$60 for VMP albums that are still available in the shop, even if you're not a member, for $40 at most.

haha @BjorgenFjorgen I did the same exact thing with the same exact Feist record 😂

My Discogs says I added it 12 months ago, and I tend to add new albums to Discogs as soon as I get them at home.
But it has been a while, could have been more than 1 year ago.

Not a huge rise in price but was really surprised to see how much Malibu by Anderson Paak sells for now. Didn’t realize he got sued for an uncleared sample and the album is officially OOP and won’t be repressed. It was $15 or so everywhere for awhile and now up to around $80 for the regular black vinyl. Way more for the color variants.

UGK - Underground Kingz is another I’m surprised about. It skyrocketed in value. There was only one copy up for $350 so I put mine up for $170 on discogs and it sold within 2 days of posting.
When I read about that uncleared sample I went out and grabbed one of the TTL splatter variants for about $70 CAD shipped. It's already more than double that...

Oh, definitely savvy enough, but like @MikeH said, I think people just forget. It's also worth mentioning that for people in certain countries, not every buying option is viable or even possible due to shipping, etc.

I completely missed the uncleared sample thing. You're a smarter man than I haha. I have just the plain black variant. But uncleared samples is why I never sold my Captain Murphy album. That thing will never be repressed again. I might sell it eventually but...

Yeah and that's got ONE pressing.. That thing is just gunna keep going up. The same thing actually just happened with my Against All Logic, the repress actually omitted an uncleared sample apparently. I went out and grabbed what I thought was going to be the repress and it ended up being the OG. They aren't hard to come by but I imagine that'll go up once stock runs out...

So that's what happened to "Malibu"... I was surprised at what it was going for all of a sudden. I though it was Discogs just being Discogs.

You talking about the latest A.A.L.? I have the first but didn't get into the second as much, so I never picked it up.
