Should we do a group project

I went down a rabbit hole of listening to their mixes for a short while. There was one that was mainly calypso that I loved.
I tend to love mixes by these artists more than albums anyhow (DJ Shadow being the exception) but like The Chemical Brothers - for my money, Brothers Gonna Work It Out is the best thing they ever released. The Hardkiss Brothers never even came close to doing something as good as Delusions of Grandeur as artists making albums.

Of Wolf and Man feels like Don't Tread on Me kept going, but they split it up for some god unknown reason.

Pretty much the same for The God That Failed... the formula has taken over.

Lyrically, both of these songs are more interesting than Don't Tread on Me, but it just feels mechanical.

Pretty stoked to have this one come up in my rotation. I'm familiar with Earth, Wind & Fire as an entity and know the hits, but I've never actually done a deep dive. The only song I knew from this one going in was "Shining Star" - which isn't to say I hadn't heard any of the others - I'm sure I've heard more than a few, but not necessarily been aware or paying attention!

"That's the Way of the World" is some pretty epic groove...

"Shining Star" may be the big well-known single here, but "Happy Feelin'" is a gawd dayum jam! Pumping positivity with a funk workout - I could listen to this over and over again. And probably will for a bit once this album's over.

"All About Love (First Impression)" feels somewhat forgettable at first, but the spoken word breakdown pulled me all the way back in and the psychedelic outro is pretty damn tasty! A lot of times slow jams can take awhile for me to come around to, but this got me on board. And while I may be listening digitally right now, it's a great way to close a side.

...and "Yernin' Learnin'" is a great way to open a side! We've only just begun side two and I'm ready to dig deeper into the catalogue - something I should have done a long time ago already

"Reasons" may be the song least likely for me to throw on here, but I do love that it comes off as a slow jam love song and really isn't.

"AFRICANO," FUnK YEAH! Another one I could play all day and be mighty pleased.

"See the Light" is a nice little wind down to the whole affair. Especially the outro.

This is a very solid four-star album for me - it doesn't grab me the whole way through but it sure does for most of it, in so many great ways. Glad to finally have kickstarted a look into the Earth, Wind & Fire catalogue and definitely look forward to more.

The only real problem with The Unforgiven is that it seems to go on for twelve years... Friend of Misery is even longer in actual track length. At this point in time, the album has lost its steam. The song might not be awful, but it suffers from the fatigue the album causes.

Earh Wind and Fire are great.

So question... the group thread wins! Clearly, unless a bunch of you change your votes overnight.... do I rename and reorganize this thread or start an official group thread and let chaos continue to reign here. (I'm thinking the latter as this will allow those that want to continue there own list to feel like they have a place to chat or whatever and not impede the other group.)

Dammit, I'm going to try to go through with this. I've been convinced. I don't think I'll be able to participate in monthly challenge threads or other related threads for a while with this being a commitment.
I signed up with an email yesterday night and listened to my first two selections at work.

1/1001
The Smiths -
The Queen is Dead

Sometimes it's difficult to discern if lead frontman Morrissey is being sarcastic or serious in the songs here.
First time I've listened to this album in full. I would certainly revisit.

Personal highlights: "The Queen is Dead," "I Know it's Over," "There is a Light That Never Goes Out"
Rating: 4/5 [Excellent]

2/1001
Stevie Wonder -
Innervisions
220px-Steviewonder_innervisions.jpg

Not much to say here; part of Stevie's classic period and boasts the monumental "Living for the City" early in the tracklist to illustrate the unjust plights that minorities face all too commonly. Not only that, but the opener "Too High" documents the life of a woman who had opportunities of making it to the big time, but her self-destructive habits and addictions led to her untimely death. The mood of the album does lighten near the end with the infectious "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing." Can't deny those grooves.
Perfection.

Personal highlights: "Living for the City," "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing," "He's Misstra Know-It-All"
Rating: 5/5 [Masterpiece]

I'm convinced to gives this 1001 album thing a try.

First up, an album I'm familiar with, having listened to it a decent amount before:

Not one of my favorite Bowie albums, kind of blends in with his other late period work (besides Blackstar, which is one of his best, IMO). "Valentine's Day" and the Scott Walker-esque 'Heat" are two of my favorites from here.

is this the best talking heads album? probably. i think i like more songs... uh, more, but i could maybe be swayed by a bribe. for me remain in light is too top heavy, with the second half dragging it down a bit as it goes on, seemingly deliberately. i think this is one of those records that i can listen to and appreciate each individual song from but when i listen as a whole i'm ready to move on before it's over.

side note: i hate this album cover. definitely would have preferred the back cover with the planes image staying as the front as originally planned.

Talk about an abrupt change of pace:

Metallica - Metallica

It will be interesting to listen to this with somewhat of a critical ear. It don't think it is perfect and it drags a bit, but it's highlights are pretty outstanding.
This was mine today too. I'm not a huge Metallica fan, but I enjoy this one more now than I did when it came out.

Been listening a few days... I'm not particularly fond of most of what i'm getting so far. Maybe some hot takes incoming... so warning:

Ray Charles - Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music - 2 Stars
It's well made but not really my cup of team. It's a bit boring and the length of the album killed me a bit too. Not sure if I listened to some extended version but the one it linked to on spotify is Vol. 1 & 2.

Hugh Masekela - Home is Where the Music is - 4 Stars
I've never heard of Hugh Masekela but I enjoyed this album quite a bit. He's something that I might want to check out more of. I'm not that well versed in Jazz but I do like some and this is up that alley. This is my favorite that I've received so far.

Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska - 2 Stars (i think i would rate it 1 now that i think about it)
Sorry but this was boring to me - I don't think my style of music. It was probably done like this on purpose but sounds like a demo album that needs some polishing.

The Yardbirds - Roger the Engineer - 2 Stars (i think i would maybe give it a 3 after some thought. I wish this had half stars)
I liked some parts of it but the majority of it was just ok and some I didn't like. A bit more blues rock than I enjoy but I liked some tracks that were a bit more 60's style psych rock. I read a bit and they have some pretty notable guitarists and it shows.

The The - Soul Mining - 3 Stars
This album is solid - i liked listening to it front to back but its not something i see myself returning to really. Well crafted 80's fun.

Today's is Hole - Live Through this. Not rated yet - but most likely a 3. I liked some of it. I never really listened to Hole except what's on the radio but I think their "radio singles" are a good rep of what they're like. Some of it reminds me of Nirvana a bit - but maybe it's that Seattle grunge vibe

Side note, I think 1 day is really hard to get into an album fully. I understand that they set it a day apart to make sure you listen to it and give it some thought before rating but what I think they should do is. Make you wait at least a day but after a day, you should be able to control when you want the next album.

Sorry. Just don’t have the headspace for this right now. Kinda need to keep listening to my own picks and chill and enjoy the tunes this weather. Hope you all continue to have fun, I’ll keep up and chip in with the odd thing about the albums you’re all listening to.
