Vanishing time: A boy who returned (2016) | Movie REVIEW – TwinBookmarks

Day 33, but on day thirty-five... I think.

Day 0033.jpeg

This definitely got played a lot in-store when I worked at HMV around the time of its release, but I don't know that I ever took time to listen to it outside of background music during work that was frequently interrupted by customers. I've also not seen the movie or read the book, so I don't have more layers to my experience with this today. It's a lovely album. Pretty much exactly what I would expect from Air scoring a film. Except for the final piece, which was less expected during my listen but awesome - especially as an album closer. 4/5

A couple of 4/5's

As I've gotten older, piano has slowly made it to the top of my favorite instrument's, so I love me some Monk. My only minor gripe with the album is I feel like his band outshines him a lot on this recording, and his playing is rarely in the forefront. I suppose that happens when you have the likes of Sonny Rollins, and Max Roach playing with you.

Their best imo. Pure, raw energy. This album just kicks ass.

The xx - xx

I'll check last.fm, but I don't think I've ever listened to this.
Meh, I'm beginning to think Dream Pop just isn't for me. We all know that I am not a fan of Beach House.

This is nice and pleasant, I guess; and I won't remember this listen when we get to it in the main thread any more than I remember that listen in 2019.

It's competent. She has a nice voice.

It's just kind of boring. I go back to whoever's beige wall description. This is music for that beige wall.

2 stars

I must begrudgingly admit that Definitely Maybe is good. It would be really good if they'd culled a few of the more unnecessary tracks. I feel like the singles might carry the album to a degree, but to be fair those singles are incredibly strong. It's a shame they strayed away from this rawer sound on the following releases because this is definitely a much better exposure to Oasis than hearing Wonderwall for the bajillionth time. However, unfortunately some of my main issues with the Gallaghers still persist here.

To tell you the truth, a lot of my hang-ups with this band have never had so much to do with their egotistical public personas or the British press's obsession with pitting them against Blur (a battle few bands, let alone Oasis, would win for me). Rather, I just don't feel like they're very creative musicians and songwriters and that's a criticism I would say extends even to this, which I mostly enjoyed. It's not that much of a hindrance, but things do start to drag about halfway in.

That said, I feel comfortable giving this a 4. I came out of this appreciating the Gallaghers a bit more than I did before and there's definitely songs here I would return to. My favorite tracks are Rock 'n' Roll Star, Live Forever, Supersonic and Married with Children

For the record, there is absolutely no filler on Dusty in Memphis IMO
You wouldn't think that was a 1969 album though by listening to it and other soul records from that year, it sounds like 1965 or something like that. But a timeless masterpiece that critics missed on upon release.

Back in 2004-2005, Cigarettes and Alcohol was one of my open mic standards to play. Mind you, I fit that description very well in my twenties.

The Divine Comedy - A Short Album About Love

Never heard of this before. It's pretty gushy and over the top. This is akin to Scott Walker's early era of numerical releases (Scott, Scott 2, Scott 3, Scott 4) of baroque pop and chanson, but Walker executes it with far more conviction. It's more than fine and perfectly listenable, but I see this as second fiddle.

Personal highlights: "In Pursuit of Happiness," "I'm All You Need"
Rating: 2.5/5 [Decent]

unknown to me prior to this listen, i quite enjoyed it. it's a fairly chill affair, primarily showcasing two guitars with one providing rhythmic melodies over another laying down a hypnotic base, supplemented by passionate vocals and accentuated by various, occasional percussion and other instruments. it is very much one of those records you can close your eyes and become enveloped by. this might be my favorite discovery of the project so far.
