I just listened to their debut this morning because I’ve been on this whole Punk journey. I really wonder what this is like compared to that and will be curious when I pull it how I feel. (I’m honestly not sure if this is Punk, I didn’t think The Replacements were till they were on the RS list and that first album for sure qualifies)Today's album:

This was released the summer between 8th grade and Freshman Year I had loved Mellow Gold when it’s was released a couple years prior but I had thought Beck was on his way to becoming a “one-hit wonder” but when “Where It’s At” was released my mind was blown and unlike Mellow Gold, Odelay was chocked full of singles, “Devil’s Haircut”, “New Pollution”, and “Jackass” this album was one that remained in my CD travel case for the remainder of High School. Beck wended up being my first concert that following Spring while he was on his Odelay Tour.I get why it's on here, but I've never loved it. It is more of an interesting listen than an enjoyable one for me. The risks and experimentation, and that this was a mainstream album are impressive though. 3/5 for enjoyability, 4.5/5 for impact.View attachment 167597
It’s such a good album. They are like a lot of groups at the time that started from the early hardcore scene (the Our Band Could Be Your Life chapter will really pique your interest). Bands like The Lemonheads, Soul Asylum, and heck even Goo Goo Dolls were hardcore band before softening their edges and achieving some mainstream success. Let It Be was one of those sweet spot albums where they had started to embrace a poppier sound but still retained aplenty of their youthful edge.I just listened to their debut this morning because I’ve been on this whole Punk journey. I really think this is a fave of Neil fans and not really one the general public even knows. I could be wrong though. The ditch triology is something though and I think as a piece of that it is great.35/1001
Neil Young - On the Beach
First time listening. I will say that both "Walk On" and "See the Sky About to Rain" are neat tracks. However, for my enjoyment's sake, it was downhill from there. Well...maybe except for "Ambulance Blues."
My biggest gripe here is that I wish Neil was more varied and that he would change the blues vibe in at least a few songs.
I get that this is a supposed all timer of 70s singer/songwriter musicianship. Ultimately, you're not going to convince me to become a Neil Young fan with this album.
Personal highlights: "Walk On," "See the Sky About to Rain," "Ambulance Blues"
Rating: 2.5/5 [Decent]
Really, more like a 2/5 for my own enjoyment.
