I don't care, boring is boring. They make me gaze at my shoes and wonder why I'm not listening to something I like.... :p (I kind of thought they might not be shoegaze, but leaned into it anyhow)
Spoon is one of the most consistently brilliant Indie Rock bands over the past 25 years. You’re not a big Indie Rock guy though from what I’ve gathered which is fine. Maybe youl’ll be pleasantly surprised when Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga or Gimme Fiction turns up on the list.

I mean, I'll give them another go, but I tried a while back and just found it all beige. I know everyone here loves them, but they just don't do it for me. I was gonna go into a whole indie rock as a genre is stupid rant but then noticed their albums were predominantly released by Merge and Matador, so I won't get on that soapbox right now.

I like some Indie rock, I like the National, they're indie rock, right? I don't like them enough to have their whole discography or join their club, but I like the records/cds I've got and I've seen them live (which is why I started listening to them in the first place when they opened for Modest Mouse/REM).

Andrew Bird is indie rock? I fucking LOVE him.

But yeah, you're probably right... I listen to a lot of Country, a lot of Soul, a lot of Jazz, and a little bit of everything else.

Are 4AD, Loma Vista, and ATO really indie labels? I mean I get that (I think) they aren't part of some big mega media conglomerate, but they release some stuff that sells in pretty big quantities, no? What constitutes Indie? I mean Dischord is fucking Indie... you know what I'm saying?

Indie = not a major label. At this point I think there are only 3 Majors still around, Universal, Warner, and Sony. They also have subsidiaries too (that is where it gets confusing). I don’t know which labels are owned by other labels. 4AD is definitely an Indie. Not sure about Lima Vista, and ATO is Dave Matthews (and his longtime manager’s) label. I am not sure if it’s fully independent or if RCA (or whoever owns RCA now) helped them out by setting them up with a boutique label.

Post-punk immortality. Cold, callous, cunning, claustrophobic. Perfect.

Personal favorites: Wait, I have to pick favorites? OK... "Disorder," "Day of the Lords," "Insight," "New Dawn Fades," "She's Lost Control," "Shadowplay," "I Remember Nothing," wow I love it
Rating: 5/5 [Masterpiece]

I mean, but that's part of what I'm saying though, what is 4AD's market share, you know? Should we be redefining indie? Should there be Mega Labels, Major Labels, Big Labels and Indie? I don't know, I'm just saying that 4AD and Dischord shouldn't be clumped together like they have similar business models and ability to provide for their artists.

Well, shit, 4AD is less indie than I thought. They are part of Beggars Group which also has XL and Matador. I think that would move them from Big label to part of a Major in my opinion (if we were using what I just talked about)...

ATO is distributed by Universal, so they're out of the running (even if Wiki defines them as an independent)... same reasoning REM isn't in Our Band...

Loma Vista is owned by Concord who is part of Universal....

Dischord is fully independent.

Never listened to this one before, looking forward to it.
This deserves more than a background listen at work. Until I read the allmusic review, I did not even realize that there were lessons on the music before each song. I would like to have a physical copy of this for the liner notes described in said review. I have been fascinated with "world music" since I first heard Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes. The sitar made itself noticed to me by the Beatles and Shankar is the guy who really brought this music to the west. I always find it fascinating and calming. It certainly speaks to my soul more thoroughly than A Love Supreme does. This music seems to travel the collective consciousness. 4 stars.

I think in an industry term indie in terms of labels means independently owned, so not publicly floated. That’s how indie is determined for stores for RSD and indie exclusive eligibility too. The like of XL and Domino, amongst others, have had a few enormous shoot out stars that means that they definitely aren’t that image of indie as almost DIY, but I’m also pretty sure they haven’t been floated either.

Day 95

Hadn't heard of this one before but it sure made for a good follow-up after starting the day with The Jesus and Mary Chain's 'Psychocandy.'
I feel like I spent a good portion of my life thinking shoegaze was something different than what it is, which has opened up a wonderful world of late discovery for me recently. Quite dug this one and imagine I'll spend more time with sooner than later. 4/5
I really love this one and have streamed it a few times this past month.

Yeah I think the difference between a small Indie and a large Indie is like the difference between your average person and a millionaire where the difference between a big Indie and a Major Label is like the difference between a millionaire and a billionaire. Like they are completely different things.

I get that part of it for sure. Notice I didn’t compare like Merge to Dischord. But XL is part of a conglomerate. Which puts them in like a coalition in the bunny rabbit show by Sandra Boynton, ladies and gentlemen, can you hear me hello I just want to say what’s the bunny rabbit show here we go we are 10 terrific rabbits, and we like to dance and sing to her if they cry, but we can do most anything we’re very good at hopping. We’re hopping in a row we’re not so good at shopping. It’s the bunny rabbit show. You can tell that we are robins fires are very long and our noses always cover with me, saying the rabbit song oh we are 10 terrific rabbit time. Would you like to learn some thing we asked 10 terrific rabbits we can do most anything we’re very good at jumping, we can do bunnies here but he’s there a bunny tree for you you but if you’re not around it don’t worry it’s OK you just find yourself somebody years ago be on your way hey yes, we know we are all terrific rabbi. Tell me about the Rosa know is the bunny that’s right it’s Avani tonight .

In one way in terms of reach. Yes. But in the other, in terms of R&D they’re likely more similar to the little indie in a lot of ways. Not being beholden to shareholders and profit margins they will still take risks on artists and sign people they like rather than just people they can mould into megastars. The days of majors taking risks is long long gone.
