The Blue Note Thread

So, can someone re ommend me the best of the bn80 releases?
This probably doesn't help, but most of them are awesome. Out of the ones coming up in the next few months, I'd say these are the ones I'm eyeing the most:

Grant Green - Grant's First Stand
Freddie Hubbard - Open Sesame
Donald Byrd - Ethiopian Knights
Kenny Dorham - Una Mas
Art Blakey - Indestructible
Jutta Hipp - Jutta Hipp with Zoot Sims
Joe Henderson - In 'n Out
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Meet You at the Jazz Corner of the World
Grant Green - Alive!

Quick update - not necessarily connected to BN, but note that a LOT of the Impulse!/Verve "Vital Vinyl" drops have been revised (again!)

Others have actually been posted for preorder via Amazon:

July 12 - Impulse!/Verve "Vital Vinyl"
Archie Shepp – Fire MusicVital VinylAmazon$25
McCoy Tyner – InceptionVital VinylAmazon$25
Ella Fitzgerald – Sings The Cole Porter SongbookVital VinylAmazon$35
Charles Mingus – The Black Saint And The Sinner LadyVital VinylAmazon$25

The 2019-20 Jazz Reissues (Needles & Grooves) spreadsheet has been fully updated to reflect the changes. (Cross-posted on the Jazz thread)

What a great set!

I think I have to pick up that Tyner album at the very least...

Looking at the list I counted 14 must haves between the TP and the 80, and that's only because I have some good older copies of some of them or else I think i would have been around 19
I'm in the same boat. I have been trying to avoid the Verve reissues too because I know I just can't afford to buy them all. There are quite a few TP and 80th (specifically some of the Grant Green stuff) that I haven't been able to find out in the wild in good condition as older presses so will cave on those first and then it will domino out from there hah.

Just looking for recommendations, impressions. It seems a little for me as not a true "scholar of jazz" to help me make decisions on what to check out.
I'd like to think the list I posted is a pretty good variation of different types of jazz, but if there are any albums you currently enjoy, or if you like any particular instruments/players, happy to point you in a more specific direction. The best advice I've gotten about jazz when starting to listen to it is to follow the bread crumbs when you hear an album you like. Read those liner notes and look at the credits. Love the drumming on a certain album? Look for other albums with that drummer on it or see if they created anything as a band leader. Same goes with other instruments. You'll start seeing players you like popping up on all sorts of records and you'll start seeing combinations of players appearing over and over again on different albums and labels. And don't just stick to Blue Note although it has a fantastic mix of albums and people involved. Branch out to Prestige, Impulse, Verve, and all the other smaller labels.

@johnpisme forgot to quote you

The Kenny Dorham is amazing. That's got Tony Williams on drums who pretty much smokes in any group he's in. Very classic.

Grant is a favorite guitarist of mine and Grant's First Stand is much earlier date with be-bop guitar. The Alive! LP is also awesome, but much more emphasis placed on funkiness. I believe the first tune covers Kool & The Gang. It's a great show.

Donald Byrd's LP is very fusion oriented. The closest you will find on this list to something like Miles' Bitches Brew. And has always been expensive to find. Very laid back funky long jams.

I don't know the other as well, apart from their style, so can't weigh in on those. The Jutta Hipp is a completely new name to me. I know who Zoot Sims is, and he's pretty good, but not a guy I would seek out.

I don't really like that Horace/Blakey album either , I was going to pick up a copy of the 75th for cheap a few years
So... I listened to some Nichols last night and thinking about Monk, it might be Silver’s attack. I mean he is pounding that piano like it hurt him. Also Safari just sort of starts, it’s abrupt and unsettling.

This thing is a comp of three tens, right? The album has a couple different track listings on Spotify, I’m wondering if it also might be a sequencing issue that makes it feel off.

ago and after having a preview didn't jump .

Well, this is really hard to do as I plan on getting all of them except for the Robert Glasper (it just did not move me enough upon trying it out, but I might come back to it), and Brian Blade Fellowship because I just don't think I will spin it more than once, as good as it is. I'm going back and forth on the Bobbi Humphrey album mostly because it has vocals and for some reason that kind of ruins things for me, but the grooves are just so damn good on that album so I don't know. All the rest are things that will definitely get multiple spins from me.

If I had a gun to my head and had to pick just six or die:
Freddie Hubbard – Hub-Tones
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers – Indestructible
Joe Henderson – In ‘n Out
Kenny Dorham – Una Mas
Dexter Gordon – A Swingin’ Affair
Grant Green - Grant's First Stand
and I would cheat and throw in Larry Young - Into Somethin' because it doesn't count as part of the six since I already own it and has an insane lineup of my favorite drummer and favorite guitarist as well as one of my favorite sax players backing him up.
