2020 has been wild for sure, but now we’ve come to a day where THREE Tone Poets have been released at once. What a time to be alive. And The Kicker’s first ever vinyl press to make it even sweeter.

Amazon.ca's vinyl logistics has been totally messed up by COVID. But I got them locked in at a good pre-sale price so I am fine to wait. I think my last BN80s have actually been shipped directly to me from one of the east coast US fulfillment centres.

I’ve seen it for relatively cheap on Discogs if you haven’t been checking there. Is it a RSD first? I feel like it’s something Blue Note will put out a black version of soon.

I ordered it but have never heard any of the recording before. Can anyone comment on sound quality or actual quality of the music? Also, happy 100th to Bird.

I just picked it up at my local as well. They had 3-4 (Newbury Comics -- Newbury Street) -- they price above MSRP which drives me crazy, but if you think you are at risk it is only a few blocks walk for me :)

I'm heading out, but I'll take an excuse to drop it on.... also, totally not related but I just want to tell someone that might care -- I got the signed Ambrose today and it's a pretty neat thing.
 
Charlie Parker: Jazz at Midnight. Caveat: I'm not an expert on Parker.

Sax way up front in the mix; crowd, piano, drums, and rest of the band clearly well behind the mic. Great interaction on the first track (Ornithology) between Parker and Max Roach (drums). Clear enthusiasm from the crowd and both band and crowd are having a good time. Parker is amazing to listen to -- you really get the sense that he could take it anywhere he wanted and he's blowing with great power. Downside -- he's pushing the tolerances of the mic at some points.

The piano leaves you wishing you could hear more clearly as there is some nice playing. Absolutely no regrets in buying the record. The crowd is having a ball in that room.

Net: It will never be demo record, has some harsh upper ranges, plays a bit like history, and the band occasionally sounds like they are in the kitchen -- but it's really hard not to grin like a kid listening and holy cow it gives you the sense of wonder at Parker (and leaves me feeling the gap in my knowledge/collection) and how transformative he was -- buy for Parker, Jack Holliday, a joyous crowd, Roach and Parker crushing it.

Great review, similar experience on my end. Same with the Gillespie/Parker release, very fun records that make you feel like you’re in the room.

Yeah it’s a little bizarre and I’m not even sure who owned the rights to the recording before UMe put this out. Was it ever commercially released before this vinyl release?

According to the press release the tracks are making 'their vinyl debut'. Not sure if this means they were available on CD at one point.
 
I'm not normally a fan of jazz after the 1970s but the BN80s of Hand Jive and Canvas are really quite enjoyable. Got those very inexpensively with that big Deep Discount sale. $20 I believe combined.
