I tend to use the Uncompromising Expression as an extended liner notes when listening to a Blue Note album that features in the book, rather than reading cover to cover. For example I picked up Ornette Coleman Trio - At The Golden Circle Stockholm (Vol. 1) the other week and during the second play-through read the section of the book (think it was around 4 pages) that specifically reviews that album. Saying that, there is a meaty intro which features on how the label was set up (although once you have read a couple books/articles on Blue Note this tends to be a repeat without too much extra info). The photos really make this book worth having, as theres lots of 'behind the scene' photos, session photos, location photos etc.How much actual meat is there to that Uncompromising Expression book? Don mentioned it in the AMA, but I haven't been able to find out just how much actual history or musician interviews or whatever else is in there besides just pictures. Pictures are nice, but I want to really get the nitty, gritty details.
How good is the Blue Note Records Biography by Richard Cook? I want to pull the trigger on it, but reviewers on Amazon seem to say that it doesnt give the whole story and some parts are inaccurate.
The Biography is good and was the first Blue Note specific book I read so there was a steep information/learning curve. It is pretty heavy at times, I found myself stopping to listen to the album a particular section was referring to as its written with the assumption you know the music inside and out. I actually watched a Blue Note biopic a few weeks before reading the book and remember feeling like there were bits of the film that the book missed (and vise versa to be fair to it). If you can get it cheap I would recommend it. I bought all the books mentioned way under RRP by just checking eBay every now and again. The Uncompromising Expression is probably the most expensive of the set (Amazon has it at £35) but I managed to pick it up new on eBay for £15 inc postage.
