The Blue Note Thread

I completely forgot that I had planned on bidding on that Elvin Jones - Dear John C!

I'm headed down to the outer banks of NC right now and while my wife is driving, one of my primary distractions has been these funkyousounds auctions. I've only won two things so far. Some of them have gotten completely out of control! For example:

After I lost this, I bought a NM copy on discogs for $75. I've been chasing a good copy of this for a while now. It's pretty surprising how high some of these end up going for. I keep checking discogs prices and putting in bids appropriate for the pressing and condition based on that and then it just overshoots anything reasonable by a mile.
Isn't this $35 on Acoustic Sounds?

Pretty sure these were mastered by Bernie Grundman, should sound great .
Does anyone have anything to say about this press?

Seems like it’s this pressing—

Afro-Cuban for $40 seems decent though.
Gonna go ahead and assume it’s not all analogue though.
“Transferred from the first-generation full track mono masters.”

where something goes WAY beyond market price. I always research the stuff I want to buy on discogs/other ebay listings/blue note's site to know the max of what I'd want to spend on something and where else I can get a copy.

Made this mistake once yesterday actually... fortunately it wasn't too bad, like a few bucks over retail and I think it basically breaks even when you take shipping into account, but yeah. It was a close one. I researched all the others I bid on and made sure I never bid above retail again...

Also, and I'm probably dumb, but I'm basically just realizing that the TP releases are basically just cheaper MM pressings. The MM guy is picking the TP releases, it uses the same style gatefold jacket (slightly lower quality but not by a whole lot) with session pics inside. And the sound is really fantastic. So I hope they keep reissuing stuff in the TP series for a long time to come!

I think they are slightly different, but yes fairly similar and the TP pressings sound great. I hope they keep the quality control up on them. MM was also mostly limited, nicer jackets, and had the 45RPM option. I have Corea + Shorter so far and will likely order more! The Anthology recordings are also very similar to Music Matters from a music perspective, minus the quality control on the sleeves + labels. I also think MM started out cheaper when they first came out--I believe they were $35? Now they have been jacked up in price and I hate the MM pricing model where they raise the price on ones that are closer to selling out. Some of them are $75-$100 on the MM website which is crazy.

Looked a little further into this and saw a few people listing them on eBay saying they are out of circulation and we’re selling for $70 with shipping at the cheapest. eBay ones were going for $99.

Needless to say, that coupled with the Bernie Grundman comment—I bought one! Damn straight! With media mail it came to $44.09. Cheapest I’ve seen a nice copy of that album go for.

Sorry for rambling, basically, thank you for the push and info @kafunis ! ✌🙏

The Sidewinder, Cornbread and Search For The New Land for albums as a leader.

Sideman? Man, just started exploring some of Hank Mobley’s work recently and there’s some great Morgan playing in there. Night Dreamer is what made me fall for Morgan recently.

Look forward to hearing more opinions on this. Feel like I’m about to go further down the Lee Morgan rabbit hole...
+1 on Sidewinder. That's just too groovy!

Always enjoyed THIS heavy cover of it by Vernon Reid.

Oh we're all dumb in our own ways my friend.

Today I bought Lee Morgan's Charisma thinking it was Caramba. My Caramba had a skip, so I wanted to upgrade it. Then, I pulled out my Caramba and fixed the skip with the ol' toothpick trick. So in the end, I didn't need a new Caramba, or a Charisma!

AYE CARAMBA!
So...you’ve a double of one of them...? :D

Also, @Dahomey , Lee Morgan’s work with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers is sublime. His most famous being Moanin’.

Trust me...not only had I checked this earlier, but I had emailed them about this and a couple other records they have listed as backordered to make sure that there was no chance of getting them from their site. This was phase one of my ordering spree. Ebay and discogs now is phase three.
Interesting. I thought the only Prestige title that was truly sold out was Saxophone Colossus. Did they say what “backordered” means?

Won Dippin' and Peckin' Time today! Have gotten into the habit of the things I really wanted, if I lose the auction I head over to discogs and buy either the same version for cheaper or a better version for way more. This phase 3 is gonna have some big ones.
