The Blue Note Thread

I'll give you the full BNC price

even though that's what i originally paid for it haha

Guess I'll be buying some new BN Classics to fill some gaps and replace some BN75s

Hank Mobley – No Room for Squares (1963)
Wayne Shorter – Night Dreamer (1964)
Sonny Rollins – Newk’s Time (1957)
Lee Morgan – Search for the New Land (1964)
Joe Henderson – Mode for Joe (1966)

Wow this is a stronngggg BNC run. I was spinning my copy of No Room for Squares and was wondering when they'd get around to reissuing it. Definitely bummed it wont get the TP packaging treatment but what can ya do?

I don't think I bought any BNCs from the last lineup although I plan on getting Heavy Soul and Bobby's San Francisco, but not much else tempted me.

Some hard hitting titles! Also happy to see Herbie Hancock’s Speak Like a Child. That’ll complete his Blue Note catalog for me.

I had been slowing down on Blue Note reissues this year, but I’m in for a lot of the albums on this list.
They press so many BNCs that nothing sells out any more.
Will be interesting to see how these do. I still will wait for sales or preorder discounts

Some absolute heaters in this run. It's hard to say any of those aren't essential to any great Jazz collection. Looking forward to upgrading a few of my existing copies. Especially Newt's Time and Night Dreamer.

The Donald Byrd also one of my personal all time favorite covers. Was sort of hoping that one was going to make it to a Tone Poet but glad its finally getting a proper reissue.

Making my way through the unfamiliars on the list.

• Horace Silver - Blowin The Blues Away (Will likely pass on this one, nothing jumped out, will relisten though)
• Jimmy Smith - Midnight Special (Think I'll pick this one up on sale, that first track is great and overall the energy is very fun)
• Clifford Brown - Memorial Album (gorgeous, definitely picking up)

Next up

• Art Blakey - Mosaic

Mosaic should be in every serious collection. IMO Blakey's best record.

I'm with you on Blowin The Blues Away, which always seemed to me to be a hodge-podge of a record.

I’m very much a Free For All and Moanin’ , I will have to take a listed to Mosaic today. But what do you like about it?

I've been streaming the new Horace title on my system and it sounds really good from a recording standpoint. I'm looking forward to grabbing it. One of the better mic'd RVG piano titles IMO.

It's just a perfect session, where everyone is hitting it out of the park. Every composition is outstanding, the solos are hot and tight, and Blakey is on fire. This was probably Blakey's greatest band.

I was on vacation in Maine this summer. While wandering around Acadia National park I was wearing my Free For All t shirt. Somebody stopped me and said that they saw him. The person preceded to tell me a story about how the bass player forgot his suit for the gig. Blakey ragged on him all night in fort of the audience. 😂

Probably true. Not sure I fault Blakey for that, having every member in a suit, similar suit at that, was part of the Blakey brand esthetic.

Similarly, it you show up for work at the Apple store without the approved look, you get sent home or fired.
