Ah maybe avoid that one everyone...The $45 pressing has clicks on one track due to a scratch FYI.

That's the move I think. I have quite a few 45RPM MM 45s and they don't get as much spinning as they probably would if they were 33s...Tempted on these Song For My Father 45rpm presses, but man just knowing how good the SRX presses sound, I’d rather throw an extra $10 for that and keep the album flow in tact.
Same, but once switch my belt to 45rpm I usually play a bunch in a row. That's the move I think. I have quite a few 45RPM MM 45s and they don't get as much spinning as they probably would if they were 33s...
It's even easy for me to switch speeds since I have a speedbox and I am lazy...but it's the getting up and going across the room every two songs that prevents me from playing them too much haha. It's silly, but sometimes especially when I'm working, I don't want to be interrupted every song or two to flip the record over. And I personally don't notice enough of a bump in sound quality on my system to prioritize buying the 45s over the 33s anymore.Same, but once switch my belt to 45rpm I usually play a bunch in a row.

Steve Hoffman Forum: Tone Poet Thread Death March Update
Had to laugh this afternoon - went over to SHF to see if I could find any more 2020 TP hints to add to the N&G Jazz Reissues spreadsheet. They were discussing ... what else? Tape warble!
What's crazy is that they are now hearing the warble on other Tone Poet releases. In fact, there's now a "Naughty" and a "Nice" list:

Everything released is Guilty! (until proven innocent). Note: Cornbread is now under heavy scrutiny.
One brave soul even went back through the entire 325-page thread to document how much "keyboard ink" has been spilled on the topic. There were 400+ posts about the warble issue ... and ... 400+ posts asking people to let it go already and get back to enjoying the TP releases.
(I can't seem to find that tally post now - may have been deleted.)
Gotta say there's a (big) part of me that wants to keep poking that hive with a sharp stick. What a clusterf*ck!

Seems like they deleted the Tone Poet thread
Agreed. I don’t participate over there but it is always my go to to try to find out what sources were used for specific pressings or how some obscure blue note reissue sounds. It is a valuable resource to have but I’m in the same boat as you—my ear isn’t super critical and I haven’t noticed the Black Fire issue. I also don’t want to listen to what the issue is because that’s all I will hear when I spin it haha. People really get into it over there on some threads though so I just avoid those. That is crazy, but as a long time Hoffmanite I would carefully point out that such craziness is actually the contribution that place makes for the music community.
Even though the discussion constantly gets too aggressive and annoying, the questions people ask about the products we buy sometimes lead to positive changes. Having said that, I have learned to stay far away from those crazy people who claim to have golden ears that I lack.

Update - mods went in and deleted FIFTY PAGES worth of posts in the TP thread and issued a suspension to boot!Steve Hoffman Forum: Tone Poet Thread Death March Update

Just saw Joe Harley recommend this Blue Note doc from 2018. It looks to be really good. He says it focuses more on early Blue Note up to 1970 without anything about more modern stuff.
I mean the Hoffman boards are useful for getting certain info, but otherwise, these people have way too much freaking free time on their hands, and seem to self-vindicate themselves when they can allegedly hear some type of "error" or point out some type of miniscule issue. My Tone Poets all sound amazing, Black Fire included, so I don't worry about it.Update - mods went in and deleted FIFTY PAGES worth of posts in the TP thread and issued a suspension to boot!

I've read every post in that thread, and it's pretty fascinating both in terms of musical criticism and sociological observing. I am one of the folks that *does* hear the issues on Black Fire and I also remember them jumping out at me on NHSNHS. I originally went to the thread to read if other folks were experiencing problems with Black Fire because it was so obtrusive and I wanted to know if it was worth trying to exchange for a new copy or whether that wasn't likely to help because they were all that way (like the weird non-fill issue that happened with New Bottle Old Wine that Blue Note finally tracked down to an issue with a particular stamper).
My experience with that discussion was equal parts frustrating and funny to me because I ended up with two copies of Black Fire and uploaded clips of both and asked folks if they could hear any difference in the degree to which the pitch problems existed in each (I felt like one of my copies was way better than the other one, which gave me hope that maybe I could get a good one from amazon but I also felt like maybe I was imagining it). After posting the clip with the specific request for help, nobody on either side really responded. After lots of brigading on both sides, someone who didn't hear the issues asked what the point even was; what did the people who heard the issue want to happen? I thought this was a great question! So I re-posted my clips with the same question. Crickets.
After that, I just grabbed my popcorn.
The Hoffman forum is an invaluable source of information, but it is hard to get value out of it if you haven't been on a thread since the start or if you aren't willing to read thousands of posts about a particular topic. The Music Matters Jazz reissue thread is over 20,000 posts!
Does the Black Fire detuning happen in the last song? I think i caught it last listen, sounded like it defined and then tuned back again. Honestly sounded coolHonestly man, I hear it too.. I put up a post from Hoffman in this thread that has two different clips of two different Black Fire pressings at the same moment and I really can hear the difference. I even hunted down a different BF reissue that wasn't too egregiously expensive just because I'm so curious. Haven't gotten it yet though but I'll post again when it arrives.
In the meantime, I'm doing this:

Liberty pressing on the left with VANGELDER stamps, MM pressing on the right. I got the BN80 coming too just for the hell of it.
My thoughts after the first track of the Liberty? It's much more pleasant sounding. The harsh horns in the Egyptian on the MM press are way tamer on the Liberty. Gotta listen again for more. Not sure why in doing this. Fun, I guess??
Clean Liberty pressings with the VANGEDLER stamps are typically amazing. I have a bunch and love them, and they are usually affordable-ish.Honestly man, I hear it too..
