The Blue Note Thread

Anyone make an eBay purchase of more than one DeAgostini album from Barking*Bargains in the UK? I'm wondering if they will combine shipping and how much I might save.

And am I hearing the quality is pretty good on that series? Closer to BN80 than the 75th pressings?

I'm looking at picking up Dexter Gordon - Go, Hank Mobley - Soul Station and McCoy Tyner - The Real McCoy.
I have done two orders from that seller (got 9 total albums). From what I remember, they did combine shipping on the first order but then didn't combine shipping on the 2nd batch I ordered. I think they realized that more people from the US are buying them and wouldn't cut a deal anymore (probably mostly N&G members haha). I have Go and Soul Station and both sound great. I already had another copy of The Real McCoy so skipped out on that one. The Bill Evans album is also awesome if you're looking to add any others...

If anyone is interested, here are needle drops of the MMJ (45 RPM) and BN80 versions of Indestructible. I'll keep the identities of each file to myself for the time being.

When you record these, do you just do it straight into audacity with no manipulation? I am trying to do a comparison of two versions of a record, but one is noticeably louder than the other and I'm worried this will be a dead giveaway and ruin the "blind test". Would you say trying to volume match them is a good idea, or leave them as is?

Straight into audacity, but then I use the normalize function (to -0.5 dB) to even out the volume on all of the samples.

Too rich for my blood but a couple of Disk Union Lee Morgans here (Vol. 2 & 3) for £80 each for anyone interested in this series. They do have make an offer options so you might get a discount.

Morgan’s my favourite trumpeter and the Vol 3 if one of my favourite albums of his. Shame it’s such a hefty price.

Sadly this series seems to be pretty pricey. With the two I have, it’s a toss up for me if these or MM are better but these are in mono. If the same album was on MM and the Disk Union series, I would probably go for whichever was cheaper unless I truly wanted the mono.

Yeah, pricey AF but they do seem to be going around this price at the moment and if I had the money I'd love to hear one of these. Keep an eye on this seller though, they had Henderson's Page One Disk Union a few weeks ago for £60 with make an offer too so more may come up at slightly lower prices.

Yea my first two I got for $70 on eBay auction where every single record had a starting bid of $70 and nearly all only had one bid. Afro Cuban was only $50 the other day on discogs so I grabbed that and I think @botherly got the Walter Davis Jr Davis Cup record for the same price. That’s the cheapest I have seen any recently. They do all hover around 80+ now. I’m glad I got the Sonny Clark one because it’s going for over $200 on discogs and eBay now.

Yeah I grabbed that Davis cup, psyched for it. Gonna give it a listen then add this series to my list of many many good BN reissues to keep an eye out for haha.

btw Carolinasoul on eBay has some Blue Note and other jazz stuff up right now. A few Mosaic sets in the bunch and a few OG pressings too.

Aw I went to buy another Downbeat Jazz book on AbeBooks (this one from Scotland) but emailed them first to see if they had any others and by the time they emailed me back today, someone had purchased it. WHICH ONE OF YOU WAS IT??

Mine just shipped from that same seller you got Davis cup from so hoping I get it by the weekend! Carolina Soul goes through phases of having amazing BN records and I always think I have a chance of winning but by the time it gets down to an hour or so, it's aways 3x the price I was willing to pay haha.

Man I know it's like that with all the big eBay sellers I'm finding. But I think it's good for when a legitimately rare record pops up and you really want it and are willing to pay... Nothing strikes me in this batch but I'll probably toss a few hopeful bids out there.

There are a few ebay sellers that are just KNOWN for having the stock of rare stuff and I find that their prices go well above discogs pricing a lot of the time. Carolina Soul is one of them. I have still gotten some great stuff from them for a good price and they always properly grade everything so I have no complaints about them. But at a certain point, I don't even bother looking at their listings most of the time.

Shit myself in the foot mentioning these 😂

Seriously though, what volume was it? I couldn’t believe I found the two copies I have in the uk and now you tell me there’s an untapped reserve of them in Scotland!!! 😂

They had volume V and VI for £40 each or something around that. It was a book store in Edinburgh. The guy said they had all of the volumes at one point but they are all sold now.

EDIT: I just googled down beat jazz record review and it was one of the first google listings haha.

That’s a decent price from what I’ve seen, the early ones are crazy money. Funnily enough they are the 2 I have waiting for me (which I need to pick up soon actually). I believe they cover 1961 & 1962. Think I mentioned this before but I would love to find the one that covers 1959

I have V and I believe it reviews albums from 1960. So I'm guessing IV is the one you want.

Was "taking a break" from studying and went poking around Hoffman and found this:

I've been trying to stay away from SRX...I know I'll get sucked in eventually but largely I have been good about avoiding duplicates of albums I already own in either Liberty or RVG press or MMJ.
