The Crate Digging & Bargain Bin Finds Thread

This was a decent find. These 4 10" records were listed for £10 with little info, just 1 photo, and the promise that they were in "mint" condition. I'm always weary of statements like that (they very rarely are "Mint") but for that price I took a gamble.

They turned up yesterday and not only are they all original but they are indeed in fantastic condition (not mint, but no issues). A great score as the Bird & Diz alone can sell for a pretty penny.

Some seminal stuff there. Nice score!

Im pretty chuffed with them, I expected them to be bashed up reissues to be honest.

I recently got the Charlie Parker Mercury & Clef 10" box which includes the Bird & Diz 10", but to have an original is pretty cool especially with the David Stone Martin artwork. The only other original albums with his art that I have is "The Magnificent Charlie Parker" and "Lester Young With The Oscar Peterson Trio".

The Ronnie Scott in this pile is fantastic too, I have a copy of that already but certainly not in as good condition as this one.

Small hit at a local thrift store today. All the vinyl is at least VG+ and the Stones, Dylan and Big Chill are NM-. Heck the Stones package overall is in sweet shape. Feels stupid to admit, but this kind of thing still gives me a rush. For all the Ray Coniff, Andy Williams, and low-budget classical records I see, it's always a big surprise to find something worth having.

Thank you @Russ I for pointing me to this thread.

I do my share of crate-thrifting at local Goodwills, Habitat For Humanity ReStores, and other such bargain shops where hundreds of musty, seam-split records are haphazardly packed tightly together on the bottom of some store shelf. 99% of these records are quite literally trash.

But I live for the rush of finding that one rarity, that one gem that inexplicably has not been beaten to hell and back. Even with the occasional scratch and surface noise, I treasure many of these finds, sometimes more than an overpriced limited edition 180g audiophile record. There's something cathartic about pulling something out of the pile, and knowing that in a way, you saved it from the trash heap.

Anyways, neither of these records I picked up today really tug at me in that way but still figured I'd show them off.

The Brubeck is an import from Holland. It's a nice live recording from 1955, not too much to say about it. You know Brubeck, so you know what to expect.

As for the other one, here's what I posted over in the Fresh Grabs thread...

Sometimes I think we should have a separate thread called "Stale Grabs" that focuses entirely on thrift store and yard sale oddities we rescued from that gigantic pile of white gospel and classical music records.

Grabbed this from a thrift store today along with a random Dave Brubeck Dutch import. This is a band called "The Chimps" although it doesn't actually say that anywhere on this record. It was a side hustle of another group called "Thomas A. Edison Electric Band" and they quickly spit out two Chimps albums as a way to capitalize on Monkees-mania in 1967. I'll let the overly-excited author of their discogs page take it from here:

So yeah the album begins with two Monkees songs which are followed by a goofy yet forgettable original tune called "The Chimp's Theme" before you're suddenly greeted with this:

Then it goes right back to harmless pop for the duration of the album, although that psych-ish organ starts creeping back into the album's closing track.

In conclusion there are worse things I could've spent three bucks on.

That's all for now! But there will be more. Oh yes, there. Will. Be. More.
