BOC in someone else's top 50!!
I can see why someone who liked the first two Portishead albums may not like Third as much, it deviates quite a bit from their trip-hop roots and is more influenced by things like psychedelic rock and experimental electronic music. That said, the fact it is so different, not just from other Portishead albums but really from any other album I've ever heard, is part of what makes it such an amazing piece of work to me. It gives a very unique experience and really just brings you into it's own world. It can be both beautiful and heartwrenching, as well as terrifying and claustrophobic, sometimes at the same time. It's hard to explain why but it strikes a chord with me very few albums can manage to.I need to try to get into Third again. I loved Portishead's previous albums but this one didn't sink into me as much. Solid Gorillaz Favorite!
i need to listen to third
personal bias comes in *big time* will Be the Cowboy... at the end of 2018, I went through a very very rough period which included (among other shitty things) a really bad break-up with someone I loved a lot... if not for Be the Cowboy being there to help me get through that, I genuinely don't know if I would have been able to make it out of 2018 in one piece so I admit that it's so high up due in part that it's one of the few albums I can say probably helped actually save my life. It gave me solace and comfort at a time where I was at my lowest point and I will always love it for thati need to listen to third
and though i get a lot of people LOVE be the cowboy, i just found it a little disappointing, i dont feel as connected to it as i was with puberty 2 or bury me at makeout creek, still great but not in my top 50
I saw Portishead on the Third tour, amazing voice but she spent most of the Set with her back to the audienceI can see why someone who liked the first two Portishead albums may not like Third as much, it deviates quite a bit from their trip-hop roots and is more influenced by things like psychedelic rock and experimental electronic music. I like it a lot.
21 and 25 are amazingTime for the second half:25) Daft Punk - Discovery [house]
A litany of clever usages of samples on an electronic album are found here. Nearly two decades old? Seriously? Throw this on at a party and the joint will still come alive. An hour of tunes to let go and free oneself to dance without worry. "Too Long" is not long enough.
24) Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F♯A♯∞ [post-rock]
Thanks to 2020, this album rings a different tune, doesn't it? The hopeless, oppressive, and grim atmosphere is palpable from the introductory swelling droning. Of course, that apocalyptic spoken word monologue holds pertinent.
"...The government is corrupt
and we're on so many drugs
with the radio on and the curtains drawn..."
23) Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas [dream pop]
Dream pop doesn't get any dreamier/hazier than this. Blissful distortion. A shame that this group abruptly disbanded after this album was released, although Elizabeth Frazier makes an occasional feature from time to time.
22) PJ Harvey - Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea [singer/songwriter, indie rock]
The most sonically diverse of her records, the most accessible, and (in my opinion) the most engaging.
21) Deafheaven - Sunbather [black metal, shoegaze, post-rock]
I can confidently say that this is the only album that I have: headbanged to, slept/napped to, studied to, cleaned to, listen to at work, and taken walks to. The worlds of metal, shoegaze, and post-rock collide to create something so genre-bending and overwhelming while sustaining a rather uplifting, alluring instrumental. I still don't understand the screamed lyrics, but it matters not: they enrich the pummeling kickdrums and guitars throughout the record like a dream.
