The NBA Thread

Warriors admitted it was Durants Achilles this whole time. I'd assume he takes the 30 mil player option this offseason now since he will most likely miss all of next year. This changes a ton in the upcoming free agency season.

I think multiple teams will offer KD the max this offseason (if he opts out), including the Warriors (that would be a $221mi supermax). His injury obviously affects the other moving pieces in the offseason, as acquiring KD basically means NOT contending in 2019-2020 (Warriors excepted, maybe, if Curry & Klay have supernova seasons).

No particular order:
John Wall
Kyrie Irving
Damian Lillard
Chris Paul
Kemba Walker
Russell Westbrook
Jamal Murray
De'Aaron Fox
D'Angelo Russell
Steph Curry

Right now - all of these guys are better point guards than Simmons. Trade value wise, taking age and talent into account he's in the top 10 point guards. He's not in the top 10 of overall players in trade value imo. I know people in Philly are looking at me like this - I'm just trying to be honestly criticial about him despite my fandom.

I'm not the biggest Simmons fan but I don't agree with ranking Wall over him even before Wall got injured, and even without taking his contract into consideration.

A spicier bit: is Westbrook even that good at this point? Simmons sure seems more versatile on defense. If he bothered to shoot, how much worse than Russ could he be?

Fwiw, I think I'd rank at least 10 PGs ahead of Simmons (not taking age or contract into account). Let's try it:
  1. Curry
  2. Harden (if he counts... why shouldn't he?)
  3. Dame
  4. Kyrie (I guess)
  5. Kemba
  6. Conley
  7. CP3 (I guess)
  8. Jrue
  9. Lowry (I guess)
  10. SGA? Westbrook? Fox? D'Angelo Russell? Brogdon? Lonzo? Dragic?
I don't feel too good about the end of that list so maybe he's a top 10 PG after all...

...Or is he? Why do we insist on calling him a PG? Why can't we call him a PF or small-ball center like Draymond? Wouldn't that be his optimal use, anyway?

All I know is that if we consider Simmons a PG, he's still better than Reggie Jackson. Someone get him off the Pistons and let my man Ish Smith ride.

I just went back and watched the Kawhi shot from game 7. I was wrong here too.
I thought that Simmons wasn't moving his feet and let him go by and Embiid had to help, but I just rewatched it and
1. There was a reason Simmons was guarding their best player
2. Embiid kind of picked his own guy. Simmons was sticking with him until Joel jumped out.

I think the sixers best strength is their length everywhere on the court, which is partially why I'm so bullish on Simmons. It allows you to funnel Kawhi to one of the best shot blockers in the league. But sometimes the other team makes a fadeaway long two that bounces off the rim four times.

But still the most important thing in that game.

Embiid in 45.8 minutes: +10
Embiid sitting for 2.5 minutes: -12

like a lot of playoff series, the what ifs
Man...that Klay injury tonight robbed us of another epic game 6 Klay performance. Hope he’s alright.

SO many what ifs this series. No KD and then Klay missed a game and a half and then got injured tonight. Kinda bummed because it would have been awesome to see GS at full strength versus the raptors. Once Klay and KD are gone, the team has very little depth.

My guess is Klay wasn't super injured but after seeing what happened with KD and planning on resigning Klay for sure next year, why risk it when the series may not be winnable anyway.

Im happy for the Kawhi and the Raptors!

We all know that if Klay didn’t hurt his knee the Warriors probably would have forced a game 7. I don’t think he was hurt too bad, but I think they wanted to be careful considering what happened to KD.

I dunno...immediately grabbing his knee and slamming the ground is pretty bad. Hoping it’s just a sprain and he supposedly said he didn’t hear a pop. Hoping for the best for him. Even if KD didn’t go down I think they would have kept him out for the game.

Did you guys not see the replay on that? Klay was injured.

Also fuck the asterisk. Every championship run in every sport is 80% luck.
I believe he was injured, not sure it was as bad but not worth the risk, he was able to walk out and kind of run, and they said he was jumping up and down in the locker room.

Also, I don't think it should be an asterisk win as injuries and everything else can and do happen

Gotta wait for the official report on Klay. I mean, Rondo tore his ACL back in the ‘12-13 season but nobody realized, continued to play in that game, and recorded a triple-double. After the game, he got diagnosed and then had season-ending surgery. So, who knows?

And as far as asterisk titles, I don’t think that’s a thing. Warriors’ 1st title in ‘15 was made way easier with Kyrie and Love out for the Cavs; Warriors in ‘16 were down 25 to Spurs in game 1 of WCF before Kawhi got hurt....Magic gets hurt in one of those Lakers series against Pistons (‘89?), McHale in ‘87 (I think), Wade got hurt in ECF in ‘05, the list goes on and on and on.

Adrenaline is a hell of a thing. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a tear or bad sprain at the very least. Football players have played on a torn ACL before from pure adrenaline.

I don’t think there’s an asterisk either even though the injury bug was insanely bad and unlucky for the warriors. Just as a fan, it would have been more fun to see the teams at full strength.

If asterisks are going to be assigned the Warriors have won one championship. And we all know how ludicrous that is.

My biggest surprise was the Draymond Green impersonation of Chris Webber. Didn't make any difference in the outcome just as Webber's TO didn't against Carolina but that just shows a lack of attentiveness.
