Thundercat - Drunk

Thundercat is an artist who feels like they should be exactly right up my alley, on paper at least, but I've yet to actually click with.
Looking forward to giving this one another go.

On paper, everything about Thundercat screams "ARTIST @avecigrec SHOULD LOVE!" and I definitely love his bass playing on many other folks' material, but I've yet to actually click with any of his solo stuff the couple of times I've given it a listen.
IT’S LIKE SUN-RA AND GEORGE CLINTON HAD A BABY!!! NONE OF THIS MAKES SENSE!!! This is clearly a glitch in the matrix.

So this album is perfect. Every track could have been a single. It’s my 4th favourite of theirs because, well, they’re Radiohead and they did a lot right.

Street Spirit is the best closing track by a band that specialises in closing tracks.

This whole album is a happy place.

10/5

This is really, really good.

A little overlong and laboured in places, perhaps, but it is very good. Apocalypse is probably a more focused and realised album.

3.5/5 rounded down.

I’ve heard lots of people say this and in the end when they drill down into why it is 99% his voice. I don’t mind his voice.

*Also I apologise profusely for my use of the term “drill down”. I have a fucking idiot section head who only speaks in jargon thinking it makes them sound more intelligent, they sound fucking dumb the whole time. But hear it enough and the odd bit permeates. It’s like linguistic herpes.

Let’s drill down on your true feelings here. We will go with a 360, holistic approach so we get help you on your journey through life.

Why are "Acquiesce" and "Talk Tonight" B sides? Sometimes the world just makes no sense.

Because he wrote them in between album cycles when they needed b sides for singles. I think Noel really regrets pissing away an album of songs on b sides! It did make buying their singles in the 90s really exciting and essential though!

I remember really enjoying this album when it came out, even though I'm not really that much into funk. Haven't listened to them in a while though, so looking forward to it. Will not be until tomorrow though.

PS. This has got to be my favorite Thundercat moment. Everything is just so deliciously weird here:

Thundercat ~ Drunk

I rarely listen to my copy of this all the way through because of the packaging. 4 10" records at 45 means pretty much constantly flipping. Some killer singles, but it does get long. The percussion is amazing, as is the bass playing - just wish some of the more intricate parts were higher in the mix. 3/5

I thought there was something weird about the vinyl for this but I couldn't remember what it was. I was thinking it was a triple album but then it was only 51 minutes long.

This is the first time I've listened to it straight through and I enjoyed it. Needs more listens but I'll give it a 3/5 right now.

I still want to like this more than I do. And really feel like I should.
I don't dislike it. I just don't love it. But I still can't fully put my finger on it, either.
It's not his voice, though I can see how most of the complaints @Joe Mac has heard have been about it.
It might be the sheer number of tracks and the shortness of many of them - but I also love short tracks in other contexts, so I don't know.
I love the sheer nerdiness of it, with its references to anime and Mortal Kombat. And I love the bass playing. I just don't love the album.

3.5/5, round down.

This is how I feel. It probably didn’t help (for me anyways) that it was released as a 10” box set meaning I think I spun it once before trading it in to my local last summer.
