The Official Needles and Grooves 1001 Album Generator Project (aka Preachin’ about the Preachers if today’s selection sucks)

I never really thought of it as a return to form. It was the clear beginning of a third phase. I think those three albums are all more fun but only Achtung is better. Pop is maybe just below. Take Lemon off of Zooropa and it would be better than this.
Maybe not “return to form” but reasserting their place in top of the Arena rock pantheons. I feel like REM and Radiohead could have come for the crown if they didn’t hate fame so much and Zooropa and Pop were a bit more idiosyncratic which made them less universally adored but with ATYCLB U2 decided to go big and broad and it worked.

I’m not. It’s kind of their first real album… Please please me isn’t as sophisticated. Plus I think it’s important, for The Beatles, to have an understanding of their Rock n roll/R&B roots. I do think they are a little over represented. I don’t think you need this and A Hard Days and you certainly don’t need Rubber Soul and Revolver. I have no qualms with Sgt Pepper, White or Abbey Road though. I say this as a giant Beatles nerd… It’s a little gratuitous.

It kinda is and it isn’t. You need an artist like the Beatles to be credible in this kinda endeavour and you need to represent all their phases but equally you need to leave space for something that might catch me or you out. I’d have this one in there. Out of all the ones you’ve listed hard days night would be my only debate.

I’d put this one in over Hard Day’s for this endeavor. I’d also argue that Rubber Soul and Revolver represent the same phase. One is folkier and one is heavier but it is the transition from pop band to the album oriented geniuses of their later years.

True but they’re also both great and difficult to leave out. It’s too hard to part them. A bit like Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde if you’re doing Dylan.

Thats the rub with a book like this anyhow… the discipline it takes to not just fill it with your favorite albums by your favorite bands. I mean allmusic gives every Canon album except Let It Be five stars.
