lizzo - cuz i love you

i admit to some bias since lizzo spent the better part of the decade here in the twin cities building her career, but the year she has had in 2019 has been nothing but earned. i really hope the rumors are true and she is one of the headliners at bonnaroo in june.

Purple Mountains - Purple Mountains
This is a tough one for me to listen to still. This album transitioned for a a joyous record reveling in the self-imposed loneliness, misery and depression of modern American life to a fairly overt suicide note. That doesn’t mean that it has lost any of its initial luster but the added weightiness can be a lot to take in if you aren’t in the right head space. Berman’s poetic brilliance will remain because of his music (and poetry) and we are are all better for it.

Day 31 - best of the decade

Kamasi Washington - The Epic

Choosing my number one of the decade was tough as although I had a lot of albums I loved there was none that screamed pick me. So I went with this one, which is the one that rekindled my love of jazz and led me down the huge rabbit hole that is the modern jazz scene. Given time, others (particularly Muriel Grossmann's two most recent albums) might challenge this. But spinning this before Christmas, this sounded like a damn great record. Happy New Year people - looking forward to getting back to my turntable on Thursday...

Doing some catch up to the last day...sorry I've been away from this thread. Now or never!

Day 24 - The Holidays are here...
Play a Christmas album

Andrew Hill - Black Fire

I want to add that I don't have any Christmas music on vinyl. But for this day through the 26th, I will play records that I received as gifts. Here's one that my brother gifted me this year (who has no clue what I like other than my wishlists).

Day 27 - The Clean-up.
Play a record you spin while cleaning your house.

Hiroshi Yoshimura - Music For Nine Post Cards

I don't think I've ever experienced a more pure, innocent, and (dare I say) sterile listening experience. Sometimes I wish I could live in this album. It makes necessary chores seem carefree and blissful.

Day 28 - That needs a reissue.
Play something that you want to see get a reissue so more people can enjoy it
...or needs a better release.

Carly Rae Jepsen - E•MO•TION: Side B

Seems to be a limited release that is out of print now. I was able to get mine for ~$20 last August. Not the best mastering, but still a fun pop EP!

Day 30 - Best of 2019
Play your favorite new album of the year.

Sharon Van Etten - Remind Me Tomorrow

I've played this wayyyyy too many times to count. "Jupiter 4" is one of my favorite songs from this decade...I wish that a 10+ minute instrumental existed. Excellent indie singer-songwriter record, and one that I will certainly return to frequently heading into the new decade.

Day 31 - The End
It's the end of the decade, play your favorite album or reissue released in the last 10 years - 2010-2019.

Julia Holter - Loud City Song

Not only my favorite album of the decade, but also my favorite artist of the decade ❤
She has defined and continues to define my tastes in music to this very day. Julia's artistry intertwines the worlds of classical, avant-grade, ambient, jazz, dream & art pop, spoken word, and even some experimental endeavors. Without this woman, I would not currently be exploring the rewarding world of ambient/minimal/drone music, I would not be fascinated with neoclassical darkwave (e.g. Lingua Ignota, Anna Von Hausswolff), and I would certainly not be interested in other artists in the art pop realm, past and new (Björk, Kate Bush, FKA Twigs, Caroline Polachek, amid so many others).

All of my tastes can be linked to her, direct or abstract. She is my art pop queen, and I am forever grateful that her music exists.

Father John Misty - I Love you Honeybear

Not even a competition for my favorite of the 2010s. One of only two albums I consider to be absolutely perfect. I could right a whole freaking novel about how genius this Record is and how much I love it, but I'll spare you of that lol
I feel like I should give him another go. His music just hasn't clicked with me so far.
