Haven’t played this in a few years at least. This was the first new release LP I ever bought in 2005. I had a half dozen or so classic records I’d acquired, but this is the first record I heard for the first time on vinyl.
I listened to this album an embarrassing amount when it first came out… In fact, this is my original copy from 2002. Still clean, still punches like the day I took the shrinkwrap off. If you have never heard this album, it is not too late. And I am wondering why I only pull it out every five or so years now.
Spin an album that, when you look at the rest of your collection, seems like it doesn't belong
Neil Diamond - Hot August Night
This is from a pile of records I have of my mom's. She had other stuff I like more; Carol King, Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell etc, but I can't say I have any other Neil records. Nostalgia only gets me so far on this record...
DAY 8 – Rubber Soul [album reference: The Beatles]
Spin an album with an incredible vocalist... does not have to specifically be soul music
Otis Redding/The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Historic Performances Recorded at the Monterey International Pop Festival Unfortunately, this recording doesn’t have Otis’s kick ass cover of The Beatles “Day Tripper” to bring this full circle but his set (as is the case with pretty much every one of Redding’s live recordings) is still straight
Dedicated to all the mini skirts!
I believe in love, I'll believe in anything
That's gonna get me what I want and get me off my knees
Then we'll burn your house down, don't it feel so good
There's a forest fire every time we get together
“I gave her my heart, she gave me a pen” - Lloyd Dobler
The National - Sleep Well Beast It’s hard to outdo Cameron Crowe when it comes to song selection for a movie scene. Few directors understand the importance of the perfect pop tune as well as Crowe. The best I could do was The National their music is very cinematic and been the soundtrack to my life for the better part of the last two decades.
We all know the iconic scene where John Cusack holds up the boombox and blasts Peter Gabriel's “In Your Eyes.”
Now pretend there's a different song you would have played. Spin that album!
Death Cab for Cutie - Narrow Stairs
Song Choice - I Will Possess Your Heart
(maybe the radio edit, so his arms don't get too tired)
Lloyd - "This is my eighth and final phone call..."
Ben - "There are days when outside your window I see my reflection as I slowly pass..."
We all know the iconic scene where John Cusack holds up the boombox and blasts Peter Gabriel's “In Your Eyes.”
Now pretend there's a different song you would have played. Spin that album!
I think Ani Difranco’s “Untouchable Face” would be a sweet fit:
Fuck you and your untouchable face
Fuck you for existing in the first place
Who am I that I should be vying for your touch?
Who am I?
Somebody just tell me that much.
