Tone Poet Society

My guess is these titles would not be massive sellers as standalone titles. Most of the "main" or "essential" BN titles have already been released as Tone Poets or BN 80's or whatever. These includes some great albums but none are essential.
They crippled themselves by agreeing to not do title already covered by MM. as a result they have the ultimate fanboy only audiophile series. Subscription model is probably where it should reside.

Do we know that’s a hard, binding agreement? Or just speculation?

Joe Harley said he wouldn’t double dip and that was a condition for coming on board to do Tone Poets. The only exceptions are something like Blue Train where he got to do the complete masters and mono and stereo versions.

OK, so this thread really doesn't belong in 'clubs' - despite the secret decoder ring bullshit, this is just a subscription offering.

TP sales are going down, the bubble has been burst. So they need to do something like this to at least solidify the customer base.

I would figure the 'exclusives' won't be so exclusive forever. And, in case anyone misunderstood, they are 'option to buy' exclusives, not free with sub.

Unless they get great numbers of subscribers, I can't see those 'exclusives' as being financially viable unless they find their way to the open market.

I like the 2025 list, actually like it more than 2024.

When TP first launched, it attracted audiophiles who mostly had no clue about the music but were looking to luxuriate in sound. After the first year, I suspect those audiophiles learned that they like the easy bop standards but more outside stuff didn't do with the red wine and brie. So, many titles atarted to sell less well, and not so many sell out anymore.

That's a problem for the series long term.

And, as the TP is basically an extension of the MM series, the shelf is getting bare. Has been for awhile, particularly if any notion of sales viability is included. I think the 2025 list is pretty good about presenting a mix of very good titles (Grass Roots, Byrd Half Note, Rollin With Leo) with quite good but obscure (Third Season) and strong sellers like Andrew!!! which aren't really all that good but people will buy.

Joe Harley will pack it in one day, he's not gonna do this forever. My guess is that TP has two more years to go after 2025, there is enough good stuff left to go that far, but not beyond, considering also that the less constrained Classic Vinyl series has a long run of the heavy sellers still to come.
