Vinyl Me Please Anthology

I really hope you appreciate your parents and how lucky you have it with them and the easy life they afford you.

PS I’m into my top 10 over on What’s Spinning, I noticed you bailed at 13 yesterday!
Let’s continue the top #15 contdown in the What’s Spinning thread! 😈

I am actually starting again because the three records at #15, #14, #13 aren’t actually in my top 15 favourite vinyl records from 2019. I They were more like #18, #17 and #16! I’ve finalised my list with the vinyl I have. I just kinda was like “yeah, Julia Jacklin would be #15 and Crumb probs around #14. But then when I went to #10 onwards, I was like, OMG, I can’t fit in Solange. Stella Donnelly, Sharon Van Etten and Lana Del Rey etc. So yeah, I’m starting again! 🙊

But I’ve got a gym session soon, then am catching up with people, so I’m going to do 1-2 in the countdown from Monday! So it’s like a fresh start ☺️

Can’t wait!!! 😃🕺💃

My Ariana Grande “Thank U, Next” and Caroline Polachek “Pang” vinyl won’t be coming anytime soon, so that’s a bugger. Otherwise it would of been a whopping 12 female artists to 3 male artists ratio wise! Tyler The Creator, Freddie Gibbs & Madlib, Alex Cameron and The Comet Is Coming are all in my top 15 but Alex Cameron would have been knocked off if I got the vinyl right now for Caroline Polachek!

I think I’m 7 women to 8 men, it would have fallen the other way if it hadn’t been for a couple of stunners in the last couple of months!

Here's my 8 Guesses:

Booker T & The MGs - McLemore Avenue
Sam & Dave - Hold On I'm Coming (Caveat: All 3 Sam & Dave albums on Stax got reissued in 2017, but this was on Music on Vinyl , rather than Concord/Craft and it's in the promo video, so I guess this is it?)
Otis Redding - The Immortal Otis Redding (All of Otis' studio albums have been reissued recently in their own box set, so it has to be one of the post-humous albums.)
Bar-Kays - Soul Finger
Eddie Floyd - I've Never Found a Girl (OR You've Got to Have Eddie)
Johnnie Taylor - Raw Blues (OR Wanted: One Soul Singer, but that got reissued in 2016 on MoV)
Albert King - Live Wire / Blues Power (OR Years Gone By)
William Bell - Wow...

It’s not spoiler to say that you’ll see those pink slabs of vinyl spinning towards the end of my list!
It’s an incredible album. The musicality on that album is truly wonderful! Incredible how timeless yet how left-field and dizzying that album is! If I get that vinyl next week, it’s definitely on my list. But I don’t think it will be coming next week. I only purchased it last week...

But yes, I got the pink exclusive variant too! 🔥😍

I had it preordered the minute it came out, I think he’s the one of the most interesting artists in soul right now, Love & Hate was an equally awe inspiring album!

This is great info. I would love to see me guesses, some of y'all are so good at sleuthing this stuff out.

A Stax Anthology is THE one I'm interested in. Anyone have a discount code they aren't using that they'd be willing to share?

Quick question? Do people find it hard to justify $300ish for 8 albums? Because I’ll be honest, even discounting my distaste for the anthology concept, I’d be wanting near double the content for that kinda cash.
YES! I love Stax as much as anyone but I think these things are incredibly overpriced. But they sell, so what do I know. The way these anthologies break down you are paying premium price for each individual album without knowing what they are. I'm very happy that they released the artist list (though I was hoping for a little more obscurity). I don't know if you could find older copies of each of these albums at a lower price but if you factor in that there's at least one album you're probably not going to care much about, then you're paying super premium prices. And are these pressings the quality of MoFi or the like? The verdict is still out on that.

As I mentioned earlier, at $300 USD (a few bucks under $400 CDN) I can probably get original presses of all 8 records for the same price. But I wouldn't get the fancy box or other add-ons.
I am pretty happy with my current soul collection which already is mostly Stax titles through VMP.

Yeah, I don't think there's any possible box set they could do that would tempt me at these prices. Even giving them the benefit of the doubt that the records would sound great and the extra material would be interesting. Especially considering how often they do these now, there's no way they can be spending enough time on these to make any of them worth it for me.

Yes, me. I was very interested in the anthology boxsets at first, because i really enjoy a nice boxset. i was a little sad at first that i missed out on blue note, because of fomo. But i noticed how i lost interest in the vmp anthologies when i deleted the stax e-mail without reading it. The anthologies are just too expensive for me for whats in there.. The pressings are probably the definitive versions out there, so if you are really so much into stax that is great. But the anthology will come to probably 330$ shipped internationally. that's more than 40$ a record for basically a bundle of cool records in a box. Everyone in here who has anthologies basically says you can forget everything else. The liner notes are (from real experts but so far have been shorter than the Wikipedia articles about the records, the podcast are nice but i don't have to buy the anthology to see them. The experience part also seems to be rushed more and more with now 8 albums over 4 weeks. So the whole thing would probably be over before the package arrives in europe.
I have a bunch of box sets. There are some like my rhino aretha or otis, that just have the records and no big extras. They have pressings that are good for myy ears anx were under 100$ each. I also have more lavish ones like the kinks ore one of the bbowies wwho come with extensive books, booklets. Vmp anthologies are priced even above the latter ones. So, i'm out of that for good.
Plus as i saw in blue note, there are lots of great albums from the label readily available. if it doesnt need to be those exact 8 albums, why buy the anthology? Same for me with stax and motown. I have a few records from each label, but there are more essential ones i should buy first.

But I want this Boxset because it is extremely good-looking. I’m aware there are AAA reissues that are much cheaper, but a lot of the Motown and Blue Note reissues I’ve purchased brand new for example, have had warps/scratches many of the times. I know this won’t be the case. And if there are any faulty records (if it’s like the VMP Anthology Motown, than there won’t be any issues), VMP will gladly replace me! And I plan on listening to the podcasts as well this time! 🎙📻🙇‍♂️

I don’t want to just buy Stax reissues. I want it to be curated in a Boxset for me! I’m definitely more of a Motown person than a Stax person, so I think the podcasts and overall experience will definitely make this experience special! 💎🎁

And I can also afford this Boxset! I’ve been putting a lot of things on a payment plan, so all has been good! Get paid on Wednesday luckily and I’ll be all good to buy this sweet thing when it drops 😇

PS - I really hope the William Bell record in this Boxset is “Phases of Reality” 🤞

I'm drunk af but that's bullshit just get the og's

I would really like to get a NM Sam and Dave Hold On album. I swear that album and Soul Man are perpetually VG-. I have never found either in better shape than that ha! Party records for sure. Also, Hold On is the best song to ever be recorded in a bathroom

*in good condition

if you are really dedicated to the best sound you either buy all of them on discogs OG pressings at good enough condition for you.. or buy the box... depending which ones cheaper and you trust more (this is just if there hasn't been a repress by like analogue productions, mofi, speakers corner, etc.)
