Vinyl Me Please Anthology

So the Maiden Voyage that's part of the Anthology, yeah Blue Note is releasing it as a stand alone in July 2021. Kevin Gray master and pressed at Optimal in Germany.

Glad that they're releasing the "classics" at the BN80 price point. This might be my own monthly "subscription service" since I haven't spent much time with many of these.

After they release the Maiden Voyage BN Classic you can do pretty well for yourself at getting Herbie AAA reissues for under $35 USD each:

Takin' Off (BN 80)
My Point of View (Tone Poet)
Inventions & Dimensions (BN80)
Maiden Voyage (BN Classic)
The Prisoner (Tone Poet)
Crossings (Speakers Corner)
Head Hunters (AP 33)
Man-Child (Speakers Corner)

Plus Speakers Corners' release of Flood, which is a double LP and like $65 but still.

So were all of the early Dead albums. They explicitly say these are all new lacquers cut for the Dead Anthology and I don't doubt them.
I'm not convinced they have a new American Beauty or WMD. Anything that would detract from the 50th surely isn't going to happen. Honestly think they'll have the 2011 Rhino's in there. In fact at this point I think they might have only recut Reckoning, without a net and live/ dead (despite the 03 Rhino being great).

I keep looking at this box! Just can't seem to fully shut it down but in the media I've seen it just says Laquers cut by Chris Bellman. It doesn't actually say when he cut them. So 3 could have been the frankly brilliant jobs he did in 2011. I may have missed something though.

"We then sent the tapes to Bernie Grundman mastering, where Chris Bellman cut new lacquers for this project"

In that case its madness. He cut them in 2011 from the original tapes. Some one on the Steve Hoffman WMD thread said CB is in the Deadwax on the 2020 (from the tapes with a plangent step) and now this. So he's cut 2 of them 3 times in nine years including (if the Hoffman poster is right) twice in 2020. That's crazy! I'm almost tempted to buy the thing just to see what's going on.

To be fair that was 9 years ago already. I don't know if they are reusing any of the lacquers for the Herbie Anthology, but if not that would mean that Kevin Gray has cut Maiden Voyage twice this year plus once for the MMJ in 2015, and another time for Analogue Productions in 2010. Pretty crazy.

He definitely cut a lot of those BN80s too for 2019-20 that were previously cut by him in ~2015 for MMJ as well.

So it's not that bizarre in the world of vinyl reissues.

Hmmmmmm. But what on earth? He should know what the originals for E72, AB and Workingmans Dead sound like! He cut the things in 2011! Reads like no Plangent step.

I'm intrigued

Plangent was only used for the newest Rhino reissues I believe, not for the VMP Anthology. I'm no engineer, I assume he just listens to the originals right before mastering them to get a fresh audio image in his mind of how it should sound.

Yeah. The 2020s. The article I posted reads like no Plangent but it'll take some going to beat the 2011 AB. I've not heard the WMD. Wake of the Flood from the 2017 RSD box is awesome though and think that was Glasser and Grundman did the lacquers so it's not like it was knocked together by a bloke in a shed with a pair of meat scissors.

The problem I have with this... Is that it could be pretty amazing. But that price!

On one hand... If I buy it I'll stop talking about thinking of buying it. On the other... I'll have paid $450 for something that I already own half the contents of.

Ah fuck it. I'm in!
I mean I should have it in my hands by mid next week if you want to wait. But it seems pretty clear from the various articles that these are all new cuts.
