Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Things fall apart, phrenology & illadelph halflife are probably my favourites but when I say that I start feeling guilty about other albums lol it's too hard. So much quality its unreal šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ but Things Fall Apart might be the one I'd pick if I could only listen to one ever again or Phrenology or....ya see what you've started šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚
Wish we could be roommates and listen to 2-3 The Roots album per day after work on vinyl! šŸ™‹ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ˜‚

My dream would literally be, to be in the same room as @Selaws whilst spinning The Rootsā€™ discography! Like I need to be in his presence because I just know heā€™s expressive vocally about what he hears and he is like The Roots #1 fan. And heā€™s so sweet and friendly and just reminds me of the cartoon character Arthur lol šŸ§ø

But Iā€™d also love to listen to The Roots with you too Jmcg85! Youā€™re such a hip-hop head with great, diverse, open-minded taste! And imagine us blasting The Chronic 2001, Hell Hath No Fury and Summertime ā€˜06! The beats on all those albums are šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„!!! It would be such a cute and fun music date! šŸ˜š

Hey @Clint Howard do you remember what year Roots played at The Opera House in Toronto? Was it 95? I feel like it was the tour for Do You Want More??!?! I was at that show and was unreal...

Or was it Phoenix? Pretty sure it was Opera House...

They played Phoenix, Opera House and Guvernment at different times? I think DYWM was at maybe the Guvernment? So not 100% sure on that one but I think I missed that one and was at their next show for Illadelph.

We should have a Roots listening party for sure! There's a great event series called 'Classic Album Sundays' which is run by Coleen 'Cosmo' Murphy. She essentially hires a quirky venue and bring a super high quality set up to play a specific song in its entirety. She then has a guest speaker who is somehow connected to the album to chat about it and to take questions from the audience. I went to one they did with VMP for the release of Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma (VMP actually hooked me up with a load of free tickets) and it was superb. I'd love to set up an event like that.

I just looked through my Roots collection and the current count is 17 albums (including live) plus a handful of 12" singles. I just cant rank them, its too difficult. I definitely have ones that I prefer over others (...And Then You Shoot Your Cousin would not rank that high) but when it comes to the top theres too many to choose from. The Tipping Point is one that I always love playing but doesnt always rank very highly on peoples list.

Also, I dig Arthur!

OMFG! They have Erykah Baduā€˜s Mama Gun as the spotlight for London! I love that album so dearly! The event is in 10 days! Imagine us going to that! šŸ˜©

I would so turn up to that regardless! šŸ™‹ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ’Æ

Wait, you own 17 of their albums on wax? Wow, I had to double check with Discogs and it looks like they have 18 full albums out (not including samplers and the like).. so which one are you missing?

Funnily enough im missing 'The Roots ā€Žā€“ Do You Want More?!!!??!', which is one of their best IMO. I have been so close to getting it a few times but either been outbid last minute (ebay) or convinced myself I shouldn't drop over Ā£50 on an album.

Worth mentioning that I also included their collaborative albums in that number, which I think there are 3 of 'Wake Up' (with John Legend), 'Wise Up Ghost' (Elvis Costello) and 'Movie' (Betty Wright). Then theres live albums 'The Roots Come Alive' and 'Live Au Festival Rock En Seine'.

Yeah I might have a problem....... šŸ¤£

Wow, again.. colour me impressed. I'm missing Phrenology, Wake Up (god, I want this so bad), Undun, those Costello and Wright joints as well as the Roots Come Alive.. not sure I know the Live Au Festival Rock En Seine at all but I do have a copy of that instrumentals 2LP too though.

Ah nice, thats a decent collection! Have you heard the 2 'Home Grown: Beginner's Guides'? They are both really good as well, I have the first Volume on order, just waiting for it to be delivered.

At this point, you stick with VMP if you're fine with the massive mistakes they might make with your order. If not, I'd cancel. Vinyl collecting shouldn't be a source of undue stress.
I personally haven't had any real issues with mistakes in my orders. I've only had minor quality issues (Beach House and Willie Bobo), but both were replaced. The only time I was missing something was Biggie, but they rectified that. The only other issue I had was when they sent me a bunch of extra records (which I can't really complain about). Maybe I'm lucky, but my experience has been pretty positive and their customer service has always been responsive to me. I've seen the issues on the boards, and if I had some of those issues, I would be pretty upset to, but until I start having them, I'm still OK with VMP.

See, while this was nice for you, what very likely happened is that those records were intended for someone else. So it worked out on your end, but someone potentially got screwed over.

Not unlike the recent case where someone reported getting 6 copies of Beck's Hyperspace (they ordered none) and then later that day people started to receive cancellation notices about their Beck orders.

Also Jay-Zā€™s MTV Unplugged, an album I absolutely love that I donā€™t think has ever been pressed. The Roots serve as Jayā€™s backing band throughout the set which also features some Pharrell and Mary J too. Probably not essential but a really super fun album nonetheless.

It was pressed at the time but expensive and hard to find now. There are also a bunch of bootlegs available too so beware when buying. Needs a repress. I bet it gets an overpriced RSD release someday

Been on my wantlist forever. Not about to spend over Ā£100 though haha. MTV Unplugged

I would buy an overpriced RSD repress limited to 20,000 copies world wide only $29.99 (though, listed for $150 on eBay Two days prior to the release).

Oh, I understand that someone probably did get screwed over on that. I contacted VMP about it and offered to send them back because of this They told me to keep them and they'd "take care of anyone who missed out". Of course I have no way to verify that they did...
