Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Honest question to VMP subscribers, and I really don't mean to offend anybody, but why do you still put up with this shit?

I see posts month after months from members getting absolutely fucked over by vmp, getting the most piss-poor of defects, given the symbolic middle finger from CS, and any number of ways they can be horrible. So why remain a member? I get that they sometimes press special albums (I myself have picked up a couple on the secondhand market), but I don't get why someone would continue to pay them hundreds of dollars a year for this product.

Again, really don't mean to offend, just to gain insight.

Classics is my main sub and the main reason i'm a subscriber, and my experience has been great from that standpoint. If Essentials was my main reason for joining I probably would be a lot more disappointed in all their quality control. Simply pressing the records at RTI or QRP makes a massive difference. Colored vinyl isn't worth the trouble.

Fomo I suppose. I have genuinely discovered a lot of great music through VMP and I think Iā€™m hooked on the feeling of when a pick goes right lol. But itā€™s been getting harder to justify as of late

I don't have a membership, it's NIGHTMathers. And he hates me.

Pretty much exactly the same for me. I dropped out last year and have dipped my toys back in only for Classics. The quality of these releases and the fact they are pretty much drama free (except for the missing Bill Withers listening notes) makes me jump in and out. I had thought of staying for this last quarter, but none of the Classics titles really interested me. I am curious about how Welcome to 1979 does with pressing the Country titles.

Ohhhh it's been a while...
Alright well this is the part I can't just wrap my head around. If you're not getting playable records what are you paying them for? The cheapest annual subsciption is $399 USD (not sure about Canadian dollars). That's not a small chunk of change. So what are you giving it to them for, their goodwill?

In the entire time I've been with them I've only ever failed to get a clean record a couple of times over maybe 5 years. It can be a hassle for sure but they come through in the end about 98% of the time. They are also the only vinyl subscription service available in Canada aside from I think Secretly... That's why I'm still with them.

A bit of this and while I've had issues, to date replacements have been satisfactory (famous last words: my Public Enemy replacement will probably be here tomorrow). It's annoying but once I have good, clean records, it's been great.

It also probably helps I'm still under the grandfathered subscription price and my primary track is Classics, which I have yet to ever need a replacement, aside from a missing liner notes booklet.

The grandfathered pricing is the only reason I stuck around. Hard to get a $25 2xLP from anyone these days.

Same here. I dodged the price hike last year, so my renewal a few months ago was at the ā€œbridgeā€ rate. Iā€™ll have to think hard come next renewal. Iā€™ve also been generally lucky in avoiding some of the worst issues over the yearsā€¦ The Mars Volta fiasco was the first one in a long time that bit me.

The only reason I still buy from VMP is their customer service. They are always good about replacing albums that are warped or have some other pressing defect. Granted, it is not just VMP that is running into QC issues these days. I get pressing defects from about all pressing plants, e.g., warps from RTI, non-fill from Optimal, etc. New vinyl these days is a shit show.

Also, I know with VMP if I end up with a record that has an issue, they'll replace it and I can pass along one copy to a friend (or on the PIF thread), and while not a perfect album someone gets to enjoy most of the music. And I like sharing music.

I do not stand by VMP's pricing. It is terrible. But I will suck it up a pay a little more for albums that I really want. Usually they do a good job finding excellent source material and have Ryan Smith at mastering. It is just GZ that is their real problem.

My first MV had all the same issues. Replacement sent, again, same thing. Emailed again, said thereā€™s going to be a new pressing in October, in the meantime would either refund, they also gave a list of other titles i could choose from them in addition to MVā€¦..including Songs For The Deaf! Choice was easy.

Iā€™ve stayed with it because I had the grandfathered annual pricing, which this year was upped to the ā€œbridgeā€ pricing. Plus I will say even though I need replacements from VMP more than any other place, they do send replacements with decent ease. I actually just had a replacement sent from UMG (artist pre-order) and it was much more of a hassle.

But weā€™ve already discussed it and we will not be renewing. Maybe if we were still at $275/year, but absolutely not at $400. I just saw the selections for the rest of the year, and it just reaffirmed my decision. Even if they have a few releases a year that I want, Iā€™ll pay a premium second hand and still come out with a little more in my pocket.
