Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Also, as someone who had Be the Cowboy as their favorite album of 2018 for the longest time, I can understand it not being everyone's bag. Although personally I'm very biased as the album helped me through the rough end of relationship.
These kind of albums can have such a lasting impact. There is something so powerful in music and healing. The National's High Violet played a similar role for me and when I listen to it now there is an emotional time travel thing that happens but it's not a negative one, it's all about how the music helped me through that time. I find that in my hardest times I have "felt" my music more intensely and deeply.

When it came out last year I felt it was good but not the showstopper I expected. But each time I come back to it I keep finding little things to love. I feel like this album is gonna age like wine and only get better with age

Looking at the swaptions focusing on female vocals, here's some suggestions.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe is a killer classic recording. It's eye opening to how long we've been able to make good recordings. It's hard to believe that was possible in the 50's.
I still really like Mitski if you don't have that one already.

Any other categories that might be household pleasers?

I recently had this conversation with a friend about how essentially every artist I'm in to right now is a female/female lead act. Not all are swaptions but in the store right now that I'm really digging is: Faye Webster, Charlie Collins, Christine and the Queens, Middle Kids, and although it looks like they are out of it in the store, that last Barrie album was one of my favorite I have listened to in a while.

What was today’s news?!

I mean the two singles are fantastic. But this will undoubtedly make this record incredibly divisive now, regardless of the music. Which is unfortunate. I also already feel bad for Annie because you know how fans are, she is going to get blamed for this (and that’s bullshit). Bands need to evolve to stay relevant and interesting and it looks like SK did that very well. Janet wasnt feeling it, moved on. Big deal. She’s an incredible drummer. And SK is an incredible band.

Edit: Checks SK News thread. About 12 posts in a row blaming St. Vincent. People are too predictable.

Mitski was alright, but it wasn't even my favorite "Cowboy" album in the last 12 months...

Ahem...

Got my replacement copy of Phoenix today. Relieved to say that it is very flat!

The SK news is a bummer. I wonder if that in some ways makes this upcoming album more desirable... or less. It will be interesting if critics claim it to be their best work to date.

even though i asked for a replacement and was told one was ordered 2 weeks ago I won't be getting mine until my next box. the straws are starting to pile up if the CS fixes aren't fast anymore.

Fans have every right to blame Annie. It’s not bullshit. Is Annie 100% responsible? Of course not. The band has to be willing to want move in that direction too.
There a certain bands that have a unique sound that don’t need to change to be relevant and SK is one of those bands.
Maybe the album as a whole will work and maybe it won’t.

I disagree with this statement. SK has been together for what, 25 years? It would take an awful lot for one person to come in and break that up in a year or two. I think that’s giving St. V too much power in the situation.

That would be like leaving a long term career job just because you got stuck working on one project that really wasn’t your thing. Let’s also not forget that Janet chose to stay through the recording process of the album, and even performed with them just a week or so ago.

I’m not a long term SK fan, I knew very little about them up until they came up in the forums. But just looking at a major decision like that from the outside, it seems clear things have been building for a long time, and it involves more than the sound. If it was just the sound or just St. V, Janet would have left during production. I think the fact that Janet has worked with other bands in the past, and this band has taken a long break in the past is telling. Not to mention the timing of the announcement is very vengeful and unprofessional. These are career musicians, not angsty teens. Janet knew exactly what she was doing with this timing. A lot things need to go wrong over time for things to build up to something like this.

I’m not saying St. V wasn’t a factor, but to blame her as the primary reason seems short sighted and overlooking the reality of complicated long term group endeavors.

Not to be all anti VMP but my subscription is up and I'm not sure I will renew. Not feeling SK and my subscription would renew right in the middle of family vacation.

The only thing that has me intrigued is that I though there were some hints of more 2000s indie in the way.

Resub when they come up so long as they aren’t barrel scrappings like Phoenix...
