Vinyl Me Please Essentials

If you preorder from Sub Pop they regularly ship stuff to you before the street date. Today was the official release date for the new Kyle Craft and I've had mine for 2 weeks.
I just always assumed that was cuz Sub Pop mailed all the pre orders out at approximately the same time and since we live nearby and it only had to go by local mail, we got it earlier but someone in Pensacola Florida might not get it until the actual release date.

Well, if SK is indeed the Essentials ROTM it'll be another swap for me.
Lapsley or Kevin Morby, here we come!😎
I wouldn’t waste your swaps on those albums when they’re so much cheaper to just buy on discogs

Lapsley is on sale for $8:

Kevin Morby is on sale for around $10:

You can buy both of these on discogs together for cheaper than just buying them through a single sub on vmp, which is around $23 at its cheapest

I keep meaning to buy the Lapsley one. It's a very underrated album, and for less than $10, there's no reason not to grab it.

I just picked up City Music for $13 shipped on Discogs. Defintiely don’t waste a swap on that, although it is a great album. 👍

Deja Vue@

Yeah, they are cheaper but not so much when shipping to UK. Would love to have picked them up cheaper by now.

i'd legit give africal brasil an A-... the only problem i had was i wish the booklet was bigger so it could have translated lyrics (the booklet talks a good bit about the black pride themes and i kinda wanted to know what the album was saying since i dont speak spanish)
I agree. This one turned out great. A translation of the lyrics would have been nice. Also, I think it would have been great to have some photos in the booklet. When they give me an album sized booklet and fail to include photos (as opposed to super large stylized reprints of text) I think they really missed the boat.

I tried googling "Africa Brasil Jorge Ben English translation" and got a bunch of hits where people had translated the songs from Portuguese to English.

Lyrics are the lyrics. If they're in a foreign language then that is how they should be presented.

I've lots of foreign language records and none have lyric translations. Do you think English language albums get a lyric translation in the booklet when sold in Brazil???
eh i just thought it would be a good idea so people can understand the lyrics without having to google a translation

I agree they shouldn’t be translated on the record, much like a foreign (to me) language movie but I do try and consume my records at more than a visceral level so understanding the lyrics offers another layer of enjoyment, much like subtitles on a foreign (to me) language movie. I don’t think there’s anything wrong about that desire.

I think the biggest problem then would be that they would be a sort of "official" translation, and poetry (including song lyrics) are very difficult to translate. Should the translation just be the literal meaning, or should it take more liberties so that it follows the rhythm and cadence of the original? I've found that when artists re-do their own songs in English (like how Shakira has redone Spanish-language songs in English), the resulting song is often pretty much a completely different set of lyrics, because they want to follow the original song's melody and meter.

Perhaps a better approach would be an added essay or explanation (like you get with some re-issues where the band/artist looks back on each song) that explains some of the context/meaning of the songs.
