Vinyl Me Please Rap & Hip Hop

You say that like it’s a bad thing. Some people (not semi-casual fans included) would just like to have a club they’re a member of provide them with a limited edition version of a good album then spend less money for a standard edition elsewhere. HIGO is a GREAT album that should excite a lot of people even if it’s not Phrenology, or Things Fall Apart or Illadeplh Halflife not just semi-casual “ooh Roots” fans. Like it seems right now that people are like “What the fuck is this? A limited special collectors edition of a great Roots album?!? How dare they!!”. Just a silly thing to be pulling the “VMP fucked up again” card on. If you in particular are not triggered by this and I’ve misinterpreted your post, my apologies for looping you into my rant.

side note: if you don’t like the variant I understand that angle, makes sense.
You named 4 records that people would’ve been happier with by The Roots other than what they chose. If you like HIGO cool. I’m a Roots fan, when I wanna spin a Roots record it’s gonna be one of the others that you named (plus a couple others). Taste is subjective so if you feel this is a great pick more power to ya but the vast majority of people are gonna be disappointed and it has nothing to do with VMP sour grapes or a slight against The Roots. Other groups wished they’d be so lucky to have produced a record of this quality in their catalog but the Roots have lots of great album and as such HIGO is considered middling within the context of they’re discography. The qualm most have is that this is a readily available record that can be had on the cheap (which is the same for the last 2 releases). In the past they have provided more than colored wax. Either a new pressing or of a hard to find album or a better quality pressing of a more common album. VMP chooses what they wanna feature and if they choose to low effort releases that’s fine but you would hope they could choose one of the artists best records. Even if you like HIGO the fact is it’s not one of their best (or fifth best). I would say everyone who’s disappointed in VMP’s album choice for September is more than justified.

Yeah, I wish they chose Do You Want More?!?! or Illadelph Halflife or Phrenology.

But I’m very happy that Illadelph Halflife and Do You Want More!?!?! will be receiving deluxe, remastered reissues in the next year and two!

That means Phrenology would have been the perfect pick, and their next few albums (Rising Down & Tipping Point) would have been great too! Wish we got either of those three albums (just because Things Fall Apart, Illadelph Halflife & Do You Want More!?!?! are all receiving special treatment).

Nathan - You may be right that this will appeal to a larger demographic, but man, Southernplaya was a huge moment in hip hop and Players Ball and Git Up Get Out were getting love all over the place during a time when the south wasn’t getting much love.

ghostdorado - If you are including me in the people that are bringing this pick down for you, that is not my intention. Somebody asked a question if this was a classic Roots album and I answered with my opinion. I love the Roots and I don’t think it comes close to their best work. I’d say the same thing in any hip hop discussion regardless of VMP’s involvement.

And although I don’t buy much from them anymore due to quality control issues, I will still hop in if I like the record. I grabbed the Isley Bros release and I’ll be getting Art Blakey in September.

If you love the album, I hope you enjoy it. VMP curates how they want to curate, and I realize they aren’t always trying to put out an artist’s “greatest” album, but for me, I think criticizing this pick is more nuanced than just chalking up differing opinions to those people thinking VMP is the worst thing in the world.

The Roots is like dead on VMP’s target audience in terms of their vibe sound.

Dont let your fandom cloud your mind lol When outkast was rumored everyone was excited and when it dropped it was like a mania lol
Roots gets rumored people are bummed out and now its here its just crickets and tumbleweeds.

Just not that exciting even though its a worthwhile album.

But moving on. I wonder what we will have next to counter all these last Zzzzzzzzs

J.I.D. told someone VMP had his project coming so can we finally expect DiCaprio 2? Thatll wake us up from this slump for sure.

That’s because we already knew it was a 2010’s release and when people think of The Roots, you think of their albums from the 90’s and 2000’s.

Also, most people had a very “meh” reaction because you can already get The Roots’ How I Got Over for a cheap price.

But imagine how many subscribers wouldn’t have already owned this particular album, or any The Roots album - even though they know The Roots and enjoy their music. Then on top, the Essentials ROTM is a flop. Also, outside of this forum, many people won’t know that How I Got Over can easily be purchased for under US$15. Also, look at that colour variant!

It makes perfect sense why this Rap & Hip-Hop ROTM is just as popular as OutKast.

plus, i can see it selling similar numbers to outkast just based on the fact that Jim sullicvan is a Pretty low key essentials pick and the roots might actually something a lot of the People only subbed to essentials and not rhh might swap for because ( especially with the indie rock featues on higo) that has a great Appeal for that demographic ( and i would not count myself completly out of that)

If they thought roots would hit outkast numbers theyll probably never sell out lol

Did outkast sell out? I thought they pressed more which are still around

Totally out of the loop here. I've always liked the Roots but have none of their stuff on vinyl. Package looks nice (or am I missing anythjnn regarding tracklist/samples/other typical VMP bamboozles). But if this is one of those that sticks around I'll rather pick it up at the archive sale or another month where I can add all 3 tracks and swap this in.

If I remember correctly, Outkast sold out within seconds lol and so many people cried that VMP came in and opened it back up for a 2nd lot of pressings.

But if I am gauging the endless negative responses correctly on the roots drop id say VMP staff will probably end up using this drop as paper weights and door holders assuming they got "outkast" numbers ordered for units on it.

I dont know if this is a coincidence but the forced "3 month" plan caused the following 2 drops to be sold out quick aswell.

But the roots is the first drop free of the 3 months outkast effect.

So itll be interesting to see if it can force those endless people to stay further.

Yes, with OutKast, they did another pressing! So it sold out very quickly!

I wouldn’t be surprised if The Roots sell out instantly too! I think it will sell out because the Essentials ROTM is weak and because it’s The Roots!

100% this! Especially with those rock features! I didn’t think of that!

And yeah, the Essentials ROTM is the weakest pick by far this year! I think Loretta Lynn’s ROTM would even sell much more copies than Jim Sullivan’s! Especially with Rap & Hip-Hop and Classics looking really attractive!

That's the point exactly. It feels like a missed opportunity by pressing HIGO. That said I've made my peace with it now
