Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

I have a soft spot for country and maybe even Bro country. A few years ago my dad and I were working together and once a week we would have to deliver the company van full of Highway markers up to some pretty deep areas in the country. After about an hour from the city the radio stations started to fade and all we had were the country stations. At first we would just listen and make fun of it but after a while a lot of it was pretty catchy and we would find ourselves still listening and sometimes singing along even after the regular stations started kicking back in. I ended up really digging a few tunes, Brad Paisley, Dierks, Rodney Atkins a buch others, . Yeah a lot of it was just Boy Bands with a twang, We would stop off at a buffet that was all comfort food and pig out on fried chicken and meatloaf before driving back to Philly . He's retired now but they were pretty good times Sometimes music can bring back fond memories even if the music itself isn't all that great, but I would sign up for a county track if they had one. With my limited exposure to country music I did end finding some stuff I liked.

So where does folk end and country begins exactly ?

I think of country as “pop” folk although that’s not quite right. The themes in country music tend to be more watered down. I don’t mean that in a bad way, I like country music.

I think it's a fine line (but I mostly agree).

I think of Folk as a much wider umbrella of music, which encompasses songs tied to a certain culture or location with a large focus on story telling. And often has a very nostalgic feeling tied to that type of life.

Country I see as under the wider umbrella of Folk and mostly tied to Southern and Western music. There's obviously alot of great artists in Country who come from Canada, Australia, etc but they still keep that style of music. The roots are more based in Blues and Folk music from those general areas with alot of focus in songwriting on Working class life and Culture you'd see in the South and Southwest. And even though Country has some great song writers, I'd say there is more of an overall focus on Melody and Rhythm, as opposed to lyrics being primarily at the forefront of straight folk music.

Obviously Genre is very fluid and there are examples in both that don't fit with this at all, especially now. And there are many right ways to answer that question. But that's how I see the main difference, at least in stylistic origins.

I primarily want to see (if it really is Vinyl Me Pardner) what it will encompass besides straight Country. Because I can't imagine they'll stick to just Country Music. Both to give variety and make curation more flexible, and because Country by itself is a harder sell to a mass audience.

I have to imagine, It would be named something like "Roots Music", or "Country, Bluegrass, Folk, and Americana" and integrate in different music from across the spectrum including some Southern Rock, Alt-Country like Neko Case and Lydia Loveless, and even Indie-Folk.

I honestly think we'll be looking at maybe 4-5 picks a year that fit what most consider straight "Country".

mmmmm exactly my thoughts! I think it'll definitely be only around 3-4 picks per year that will be 'straight Country'! And I hope that's the case too!

Up until 5 or so years ago I considered myself 'anti-country' And then I heard Sturgill Simpson which lead to Jason Isbell, Margo Price, Orville Peck, Kacey Musgraves, etc etc. I've since gone back to pick up albums from Loretta, Dolly, Townes, Willie, Johnny Cash. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks!

I was one of those people who “hate country except for Johnny Cash“ (and Kenny Rogers because my dad played him all the time growing up😅) Then I discovered Sturgill Simpson, who I really dig, and decided to give country a chance. 🤠

Johnny Cash is the country gateway drug. Happened to me too. It's when people start to explore a bit more they realize there's so much other good stuff as well.
It's really just like any other genre where most of what's on the radio is not the best overall offering out there, just the most marketable.

And Waylon Jennings is the hard stuff that makes you realize you're addicted.

Two things of note: if the new track is country, PLEASE have some Songs Ohia/Magnolia Electric Co./Jason Molina

Next, how does everyone here feel about the fact they're sending out copies of When the Pawn now?

Love Jason Molina. As for Fiona, I’m mildly annoyed to have no shipping notice. I understand that I didn’t pay extra to have it shipped ASAP separately, but I’ve had VMP ship other preorders as soon as they come into stock...

They should definitely have some of those artists. That type of curation is how you get people into the parts of the genre they don't know they're into. In my eyes the whole point of the tracks and curation.

And for Fiona, I want my copy, especially since I ordered immediately but I'm used to this from VMP by now and am trying to be more patient in terms of fulfillment. I generally always get what I ordered and havent been the victim of an oversell in a long time (knock on wood). I'm still waiting on both Fionas, Oliver Nelson, and Texas Gentlemen, which have all been released.

I'm not going to write into CS until next months shipments go out, because maybe they've fixed the bundling?
