Vinyl Storage Recommendation

i am not completely out of storage yet (i have about a cubicle and a half so maybe by the end of summer). but i need to expand. i dont have any room horizontally and i can do a 3X1 add on but i dunno if these cheap target ones can handle another one stacked on top

Still too much for me as well. I guess I'll have to have to start sketching out some ideas of my own

I really need some sizable flip bins - I always feel like I'm forgetting about those thin single LPs that get crowded out. I can look at my discogs collection to see what I have but its just not the same.

Have you figured out what material you'll be using? Painted MDF? Wood veneered plywood?!? I hope you plan on sharing pics once its done or along the way. I'm thinking about making a tv/ audio gear console cabinet myself and could use the inspiration. Good luck!

Haha Yes I am pretty much ripping off the symbol audio design style but customizing it for a space in my current apartment. It’s quite tricky to find large sheets of nicer wood so I think we might go with oak plywood and stain it. Maybe add some molding to it so the edges are not just the plywood edges. I’ll try to take some photos of the process along the way. For now, here are the initial designs!

turntable would go on top on the left and have two flip bin compartments on the right. Underneath is an open compartment for my receiver. Then a compartment on the middle left with a door and an adjustable shelf. This will house cleaning fluid, brushes, sleeves, etc. The other three compartments will be for regular record storage!

You’re breaking my heart! I think when properly worked with, plywood in an unfinished state and with the edges as a feature detail looks absolutely stunning lol! That’s said I’m absolutely not a fan of detailing so each to his own!

Seriously though the design looks nice, good luck, you’re braver than I am 😂😂

The ikea ones aren’t solid wood either, they’re particle board covered in a vinyl veneer too, they get more solid when they are full up and the weight puts them into compression. I’ve seen them stacked on top of one another but I doubt that I would do it myself tbh.

Never had an issue with stacking them.

That's a 2x4 on top of a 4x4.

I also have a 1x4 on top of a 2x4.

Thanks! Yea I’m still sorting if I want the unfinished edge or put some edging or molding around it. Might end up making that decision further down the line!

Hardwood veneer, while slightly tricky, is your friend.

yeah, I’ve resigned myself to the fact that handmade furniture, especially from the US, will never ever be cheap. I’m still waffling.

That looks great! Hope it goes well without too much frustration.

Maybe you're already aware, but I thought I should mention that in your design you're assigning 1" thickness to plywood, when its really 3/4".

Yea I didn’t update the design file once we settled on plywood but have compensated for the 3/4” plywood thickness!

I think a lot of it depends on the quality of the carpenter too, I’ve seen this done out of bog standard ply too with the right care and attention. Probably not one to be tackled yourself unless you’ve got the skills, I don’t lol. I suppose I’m a fan of showing things as they are and finding the beauty in overlooked materials.

Yeah, look to be honest I’d not even trust myself with the edging veneer so I would probably end up just buying wood or getting mdf and painting it so I totally get that. Just standing up for the lesser loved materials because I’d absolutely love to have that Birch ply kitchen in my house 😂

You could try a mitered edge on the top joints and then use something like a 3/4" flat molding with brad nails to finish off the front unfinished plywood edges.

I've used something like this (below) to cover 3/4" plywood. The spots where the strips come together at a 90 degree angle on the front would need to be mitered at 45 degrees on both edges and a similar receiving wedge on the other piece.
