#126 Dream Can ~ Into Sparks
IMG_20200405_095812.jpg

Dream Can’s fiery, flickering first album will make itself immediately at home in your gray matter. The young Shanghai band name checks all-time psych greats like Acid Mothers Temple among their influences, and that remains apparent from the building space-noise of album opener “Cheap Cheap Time I Live, Money Money Saves Me,” to the dreamlike tape-loop reverie of instrumental number “Gooo,” to the mercurial, virtuosic guitar work on “Kill the Man,” the stunning climax of this enthralling debut.

Dream Can’s sound and lyrics are built of chaos, fractured time, the ultimate inability (or refusal) to disentangle dream from reality. But on Into Spark, these talented young artists take the confusion of the age and turn it into something a few steps short of nihilism, something that makes the listener curious to keep going, to hear more. In the words of vocalist and guitarist A Re, “It’s not fear, it's the joy of being free on the edge of the darkness.” - Into Sparks, by Dream Can

Pharoah Sanders - Live in Paris: Lost ORTF Recordings, 1975 (Transversales Disques, TRS15, France, 2020)

I was a day over 6 months old when this was recorded. Fantastic treatment for this one. Lovely tip-on gatefold with liner notes in English and French with exceptional session photographs too. Remastered from original tapes and pressed at Optimal, it sounds great to my ears.

I definitely need to grab this. I avoided pre-ordering because it looked a little suspect. Amazing show (I’ve been listening almost daily on Spotify) - glad to hear the vinyl is nice!

IMG_20200405_103928.jpg

Always looking to experiment from releasing math rock records, to indie rock and now with this album they release an experimental electronic album, this helps highlight duck fight goose and why they are one of the best groups coming out of Shanghai.

Made up of 33(33EMYBW) whose 2018 album golem was one of bandcamps best electronic record of the year, Gooose, Han Han, Wei Wei and Wu Shanmin, create this powerhouse of musicians always looking to keep their music fresh.

The name of this album translates to club future from the German title they gave it, which is a pretty accurate title.

#128 Demerit ~ Bastards of the nation

IMG_20200405_114818.jpg

Demerit is considered to be one of the most widely recognized punk bands in China, after forming in Qingdao in 2004, they moved to Beijing to take part in the thriving underground music scene. With lyrics often criticizing China's inability to deliver on their promises, the fury they create with their guitars and lyrics makes you want to get out an revolt.

Bastards of the Nation is the second album Demerit has released, an album that has that Boston/Celtic Punk sound, while singing about the perils they see. In the song 'World has become a battlefield' they belt out
Violence and control maintained
By greed they kill we pay the bills
The World has become a battle field
Games for the rich death for the poor

In the title track 'Bastard of the Nation' you see their disgust on full display

Why the fuck am I loyal to you.
We don't wanna be your victim of greed.
Sick of you, no future for us.
How many people die in famine.
No way. No control. Poverty makes us strong.

and lastly in 'Bye Bye My Country' they say goodbye to China

I can't believe the red sky.
how much blood has been shed,
in pursuit of freedom?
you can't stop, you kill for greed,
money and pride let your children starve,
is it worth the cost?

With such strong lyrics and a passion for calling out the inconsistencies they see in their society, you can start to understand why they have such a large following. Some bands in China may shy away from using such strong language, but Demerit is not afraid and continues to produce Street-Punk sounds asking the youth to get out and fight for what they believe. For many who believe China censors their music, Demerit is one band that allows you to see the truth, while censorship does exisit, Demerit is not looking to be played on the radio, or on TV. They want to see your faces at their shows, fist in the air, screaming along as they bring the revolution underground.

For more information check them out on bandcamp.
