The original rock and roll wild man. Imagine 1955, and you go see this guy. Funeral directors roll a casket on the stage. The casket opens, and the show starts.....
Charley Christian – The Immortal Charley Christian (Presto, 1966 Pressing)
Now here's a record that SLAPS! Charlie (misspelt as Charley here) was a pioneer of the electric guitar and an important figure in bebop. Unfortunately, there are only a handful of recordings of his due to his early death at just 25 years old. This record has been reissued several times over the years under different titles. It was recorded at Monroe's in Harlem in 1941 on a portable Wilcox-Gay Recordio "disc cutter" that made recordings directly onto acetate discs. Featuring Christian on electric guitar, Kenny Clarke on drums, Thelonious Monk on piano, and Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet.
Akwaboa and His Supreme Internationals - Ebefa W'ani So
Eba aka Jerome et le Sanwi Star - Il Faut Calculer
Sweet, sweet highlife from Ghana; and similar from Cote d'Ivoire that I know little about (one of my favourite sellers included it as a free gift - which often means it's not much cop, but this was a good un)
