What's Spinning

I have a backlog of posts from the last day of two so here goes

Ram by Paul & Linda McCartney. One of my favourite solo Beatle albums

Honey by Robyn. Not as good as her preceding two albums in my book but it’s growing on me.

Tea For The Tillerman by Cat Stevens. Very underrated artist

Armed Forces by Elvis Costello & The Attractions. The last time I saw EC in concert the set was mostly from this album. Oh to be at a live concert again.

Augustus Pablo - King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown. Nice day for a bit of dub

Bob Dylan - Slow Train Coming. One of his best recorded albums of the 70s and from a distance full of great songs with a gospel feel.

And currently John Cale - Paris 1919. Signed by John himself. This is shamefully the first time I’ve played this record, I’ve had it for years. Really familiar with the album as I’ve had it on CD mind you but as it was signed I’ve sort of put it to the side. I’ll not make that mistake again. Records are for playing. It’s lovely as it always was and always will be.

I picked up a copy of Tea For The Tillerman at a carboot sale years back. Wasnt familiar with Cat Stevens but that record really impressed me, some beautiful tracks on there!

Yes he had some lovely songs in the 70s. I’m not massively familiar with his later career. I have a copy of Catch Bull At Four somewhere, that I got from my dad. I’ve only got a few handed down to me by him but they were good ones, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Willie Nelson

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds

This one is a fun one, obviously most people know about how great a record Pet Sounds is but there are a lot of available pressings in both mono and stereo so it it can be a bit daunting when you are trying to find a good copy at a reasonable price. This copy is part of a double LP two-fer packaged with one of The Beach Boys lesser LP’s, Carl & The Passions: “So Tough”; This mono press is one of the best and can be had for a relative steal.

An interesting quirk of this version is the label...

As you can see it reads “Stereo” right above the Reprise logo,.. “but you said it was mono, WTF?!”
Exactly, it is a mono press but you have to read down a bit further to find that confirmation. Under tracklisting, it reads: “This recording is pressed in monophonic sound, the way Brian cut it.” I don’t know, why they left the stereo label up top (in some versions they actually even mark it out) but I always thought that was kind of interesting.

Regardless, a great album, a great Mono pressing at at an affordable price. Check it out.

SEED Ensemble - Driftglass (Jazz Re:freshed, 2019 First Pressing - Signed by Cassie Kinoshi)

Next nominee for the PRS FOR MUSIC UK JAZZ ACT OF THE YEAR is SEED Ensemble, led by the fantastic Cassie Kinoshi. I managed to see these live at their album launch and even chatted to Cassie Kinoshi whilst she signed my copy of the record. Great live performers!
