How does your copy sound and look like? Hope all is great 🙂

My collection #686-687

Pedrinho - Nhos Dexa De Conta Mintira
The Roots - Phrenology

The Pedrinho is the most fragile cover I own, it's literally falling to pieces (and what a random image too of him looking sharp, with a bear?!), but the music is just wonderful; and the reason I stupidly went back to VMP. I think I just about don't regret this given how good it is...

It's flawless! I was amazed 💙 There's only some light fading on the edges and small wrinkles in spots but no dings or major eyesores, plus the record itself is perfect!

For my first old record I'm seriously impressed - it arrived better than a lot of my brand new ones 😂 glad to have it and hope you've found yours equally spotless and enjoyable? 🍻

Don't want to sound patronising but from my experience I find 2nd hand records to be much better value and often much better quality than new ones. I'm far more likely to be disappointed by something new and frankly overpriced. I have 600 or so original records from Africa in the 60s 70s and 80s and *none* of them are as warped as some from VMP and others I've got (although some of them as crackly as hell having been stored in humid cellars for 40+ years). Also nothing beats the thrill of digging in shops and finding stuff you'd never dreamed of getting. Hope this is only the first of many old records for you 😊

I'm really glad you have received a superb and mostly immaculate one. 😍 Great experience for buying your first used one. Mine (the 2015 reissue) also sounds fantastic. Really happy I've picked it up. 🙂 Such a good album. 🎶

From my still small experience with buying used records I already can confirm this. Many records from the 80s and 90s sound so good and often superior to recent presses. Digging for great used records must be so much fun. 🎉

It is great fun, but it can also be exhausting. I often try to have a little list of stuff I'm looking for (eg Coltrane, or Steely Dan stuff I don't have etc) so that if I get overwhelmed I can be efficient. I used to travel a fair bit and it wasn't unheard of for me to visit 6 or 7 2nd hand shops in Stockholm on one day - I like looking through the What's New sections as that's where they usually have the good stuff and then whatever I'm after at that time. Helps keep my purchases down too. It's pretty easy to get 4x 2nd hand records for same price as a new one, and it's at least 4x the fun.

Not patronising at all my friend! I'll always welcome advice from the people who have been enjoying this for far longer than I have, so thank you. I'd not been avoiding buying old records, there's just been so many new/recent/upcoming ones I've wanted that I've been busy enjoying that end of the spectrum. I have a lot of old albums I want and have held off buying them due to wanting to research exactly which of the 700 pressings I should aim to get 😂 much easier when there's only 6 and the record came out last year! Exceptions are VMP releases which I do like because, despite the website and CS frustrations, they do almost always arrive in immaculate condition and (intl.) shipping is included in the sub. I'm getting to the stage now where I'm happy with the modest collection under me and have enough of the mix of new-recent stuff I like, so I'll be moving to get in some of my old favourites soon.

I heard the same praise for old records a day or too from @Joe Mac as well, and it's something I'm happy to hear as my Albert King has brought me a lot of joy. As with much of this, the tangibility is important and there's a joy in handling something old even if it's slightly scuffed – part of the charm! So it's exciting to know that I have many adventures in looking through the old ones too. I am keenly, keenly excited to be confident in post-lockdown situations to where record stores are a relaxed visit. Partner and I already enjoyed getting out to new small towns around us for walks and pub lunches at the weekend. When normality arrives we're both excited to add hunting down a record store within them and finding a record apiece to try to that loop!

Thank you 💛 I'm happy we've both got great sounding copies to get funky to! It really is a fantastic album, among my favourite of recent discoveries and one I have, and will continue to, play repeatedly for while to come. That opening will never get old as far as I'm concerned 🙏

It reminds me of me in pre-internet times with CDs. As a teenager I used to visit every recordshop I could find, especially abroad, and checked all the CDs of artists I was interested in at that time, for instance to find rare Oasis maxi CDs, or Tori Amos, Mylene Farmer etc. I always loved to search and see if I find something nice.
As record stores got less and less in Germany past 2000 and as I mostly just ordered online (or streamed in later years) I lost that experience. It's nice returning to it with rare vinyl. 🙂

Haven't done much digging in Germany apart from Berlin, which has some great shops. My years living in Frankfurt coincided with my decade away from vinyl. What I remember most from Duesseldorf was Alt... 🍻

This band has been hyping their upcoming album...looking forward to it -

Days Between Stations

I posted this below 3 years ago on the Hoffman forum...

so...a little backstory about this record. A friend posted their video on my Facebook wall knowing I liked XTC (Colin Moulding sings one track)...I had heard the song, but kinda forgot about it. I then got on their website and ordered the "Limited Edition" vinyl...then saw that it was limited to 50 and released almost 4 years ago. I didn't get any confirmation email or anything when I ordered. I waited about 2 weeks then got on my paypal account and sent an email to the address that got my cash. It turned out to be the guitarist of the band, Sepand Samzadeh. We emailed back and forth, he said that he doesn't do anything with the orders but would look into it. He offered to send the records to England and have Colin sign them, while that is cool and all, I just wanted what I paid for or just get a refund and wasn't really looking for extras or anything.

He ended up sending 2 copies, one numbered and one unnumbered. Both are the limited multi-colored...and he had the ordering guy refund my order as he said these came from his personal stash (at great peril from a soon-to-be-ex-wife he let me know, she video'd him taking the records)

So all-in-all, this was a better experience than how it all started....the music is pretty good, too.

Did you enjoy the Alt beer? I like it a lot. Düsseldorf got many great breweries like Uerige, Schumacher and Füchschen Alt.

I guess many record stores here did close around 2000 till about 2015, and then some specialized on vinyl did reopen, due to the popularity of vinyl.
I still regret that due to having a strong cold in spring last year I wasn't able to meet @Skalap over here as he was on business in that area. Would've been nice to visit some record stores together and possibly have some beer. 🙂 Maybe in the future.

I loved Alt - I much prefer beer in small measures. I spent much time after trips to Duesseldorf and Koeln sipping Alt or Kolsch, and loved them - dare I say it - equally.

That's great. Yeah there are also some good Koelsch breweries which produce a Koelsch that I like a lot more than the bigger Koelsch brands. 🙂🍻
I think all this rivalry thing is a bit ridiculous, but we got it everywhere, between Sydney and Melbourne, Manchester and Liverpool and so on.

Just chiming in - I’ve been visiting Germany every December for the past 5/6 years (a sister in law is German). I was in Düsseldorf last year and fell in love with Alt Beer, sadly can’t get it over here though.

Check this place out, not sure if they'll deliver over the water but worth a try. Also, I'm no expert so these might be lousy examples for all I know.

Błoto - Erozje (Astigmatic Records, AR013LP, Poland, 2020)

Nice, innovative modern jazz but a terrible pressing, muddy throughout and a lot of crackle despite thorough cleaning.
Oh dear, my copy has been stuck in Europe's postal system on its way from Poland for the past two months. This isn't improving my hopes. In better news, I got to hear the upcoming Jaubi album (featuring the main guy from EABS and Tenderlonious) and it sounds v good. Unfortunately seems like it's not out till next year. There's new stuff from Cykada and EABS on the radar too.
