First time spinning, had heard dry before my system started playing up! Wow this one is equally as good! It’s great that they’ve done Polly proud with these!
I've been wanting to get the vinyl record for this album and their second one but they are out of print these days. I know there is a deluxe edition that has both of them together but I like the separate album art for the original issues.
Final cassette for the day and another live recording, this time with John Lewis - Piano, Marc Johnson - Bass and Albert 'Tootie' Heath - Drums (the first time they have played together as a group. Really compelling date, with lots of standards and the occasional solo from Lewis.
On such a favourites' list, albums make it for different reasons. This one makes it for a very personal one. "Gracie" is the first song I played after my son was born, walking home through the dark south-east London streets at 3am on a total high. It helps that this probably is my favourite Ben Folds album. I remember a review of him earlier in his career essentially saying wouldn't it be great if he quit the jokes and made one flat out serious record. Apart from the totally not suitable for kids bonus track on the vinyl (something I hate - when extra tracks are added to the original line-up), this is pretty serious stuff and all totally great. Love the tribute to Elliott Smith as well. But Gracie is still the one that gets me - "You will always have a part of me nobody else is ever gonna see".
