The MoFi’s have landed! These are really nice and quiet, the records have really been looked after by their previous custodians.
One thing that strikes immediately is that it’s clear this is an older master, reminds me more of the Beatles I listened to as a kid, the drums and bass are much less forward than they are on the more recent reissues!
Update: as long as you start midway through the first song, it still plays and sounds pretty good. The needle doesn't actually move back and forth like being 'off centre' but it is just the edge missing makes it look like the whole album is oblong. After that first centimeter or so it seems almost fine.
Miles Davis – 'Round About Midnight (Philips, 1957 First UK Mono Pressing)
Its been ages since I last spun this one. I cleaned a ton of records today that I haven't dug out in a while. Nice to jump back into listening to some of my earlier pick-ups.
Paul Quinichette - For Basie (Esquire/Prestige, 1959 First Mono Pressing)
I think Paul Quinichette was a massively underrated saxophonist (just listen to 'The Chase Is On' with Charlie Rouse!!) and this album really highlights his fantastic style.
