I don't have the words to describe how much I hated that album. It was the final nail in the 'buying expensive albums blind' coffin. I think it might be a bit like Out to Lunch where I'm maybe not old enough to appreciate it yet... At 40.

Its funny that its had such a strong reaction, yours is the 3rd that I have seen to express such a strong dislike. What specifically did you not enjoy might I ask?

Funnily enough, as I was listening to it I was reading 'Hard Bop: Jazz & Black Music 1955-1965 by David H. Rosenthal' and turned the page to a section on Hill. The book was written in 1992 and the consensus of his Blue Note albums was favourable (his later stuff was butchered), with Rosenthal stating that Hill was subject to having to wait for jazz fans to catch-up to enjoy his music in the same way that they did with Thelonious Monk, which I thought to be an interesting viewpoint.

Personally, I really like his music but it took a few listens for me to relax into it. It's pretty exhausting to hear for the first time, lots of twists and jarring pauses, but after the first couple of tracks the penny just dropped and I found myself able to immerse myself into it. Touches of Monk in there which is nice, but he clearly has his own style.
