While almost impossible to follow up the huge hit that was Kick, X is pretty great in its own right. Lots of great radio hits on here but my favorite track is probably The Stairs.
I rarely spring for “half-speed Abbey Road remasters,” especially for low-fi experimental garage art rock, but this one drew me in. I wanted to hear all the imperfections, weird mixing, off-tunings, split left/right channel rambling/jamming… and it delivers.
If Bowie chose White Light/White Heat as an iconic song to cover, that’s good enough for me.
I have his entire Westbound trilogy as well. Extraordinarily eccentric funk that deserves a second look. One of the greats who was way ahead of his time.
