Jutta Hipp: The Inside Story
Last week I posted on German pianist Jutta Hipp, who recorded in the 1950s before disappearing from the jazz scene. I also mentioned that Katja von Schuttenbach—a jazz historian and journalist [pictured above]—had researched and written about Hipp. I sent...www.jazzwax.com
Cheers! I LOVE these albums. What I would consider to be really beautiful music, especially "Dear Old Stockholm".
Jutta Hipp's life is well worth reading about, although it is really tragic. She was quite a timid character but idolised jazz musicians. She had a few bad/embarrassing comments directed her way and it completely broke her. Art Blakey was once playing at one of the venues and Hipp was there as a patron and was introduced to Blakey. Blakey asked if she would play with him and she graciously turned the offer down as she wasn't prepared and didn't know the compositions. Blakey then unexpectedly announced that she was going to join him for a song, to which she felt obliged, and he purposely played at a tempo that threw her off. He cut the number short and announced "And that's why we don't want these Europeans coming over here and taking our jobs". Shortly after that she quit music for good and worked in a clothing factory. She wasn't even aware of how revered she was and didn't get a chance to benefit from royalties before she passed away. Truly one of jazz's most tragic stories.
