The Leroy Vinnegar Sextet - Leroy Walks (1958)
Really glad to add this one to the collection. When I first moved out to Portland in the 90's, Leroy played a weekly gig at Berbati's Pan. Mel Brown – another local legend – played drums, and they were joined by Gary Harris on sax and Dan Faehnle on guitar. Maybe a $5 cover, I can't remember. In any case, it was always a great show in a really intimate venue. Perhaps best known for his "walking" bass line, Leroy was always so humble and generous in spirit. He unfortunately passed in 1999, but Mel Brown has kept the tradition going with regular gigs at the Jack London Revue. May 1st is actually Leroy Vinnegar Day in Oregon.
