What's Spinning

So I guess these Jellyfish reissues are getting slammed pretty hard over on Hoffman and Youtube.

I can only compare this to my Original Promo - which sounds great but where the gimmicky sleeve has some created some groove damage so I get a skip on track 1...sometimes.

As I recently played the original a few weeks ago, it's still relatively fresh in my head...but I'll still do an A/B comparison. My Spilt Milk is enroute, so I can compare that to the Omnivore reissue from 2012. That one is getting shit, too.

One track in and it sounds fine. Typical GZ surface noise that a good cleaning should get rid of.

Doing a quick and dirty Side A comparison...

I'm going to start by saying I'm nowhere close to an audiophile.

- the new reissue is cut much lower in volume - so you have to turn it up a considerable amount...this isn't always isn't an issue, but there's also less runout on the reissue, so where did this extra headroom go? Usually when something is cut hotter you have less runout.

The original promo has much better bottom end and "oomph"...I want to call it "Life". The reissue sounds fine when not compared to anything - but it sounds flat and dead compared to the original.

Maybe for once Hoffman forums are onto something.

I still recommend picking them up if you see them - they sound "fine" if you just want to play it on vinyl. Who knows when they'll be released again.

Interesting - I thought they sounded pretty good (Bellybutton noticeably better than Spilt Milk), but had nothing to compare them to. Not a big enough fan to fork over the money for any of the previous versions, so overall I'm good with these like you suggest.
