What's Spinning

So are you over the moon? Is that a British thing too? 😉

Oh absolutely. I think it probably needs new tubes tbh, they’ve not gone noisy but it doesn’t quite have the punch I was expecting. That said the detail, stage and stereo separation on this in comparison to the already very good stellar GCD is something else.

And yep another one of the British colloquialisms!

Behind Roy Orbison sits Johnny Hartman in my favorite male singer category. Some say this is the best example of his divine gift. I prefer “I Just Dropped By To Say Hello” with Illinois Jacquet on tenor. Better tune selection and Quebec’s smokey tone is a great match to Hartman’s voice. He is in perfect fettle on both. This is the ‘22 reissue from Acoustic Sounds.

OG Impulse. The vinyl is just as quiet as the Acoustic Sounds reissue above with a sparkle missing from that record. Sounds a good step of two closer to the master, as you would expect. Jacquet’s horn is right there in the room with you and Hartman sounds as if he hadn’t just smoked a pack of cigarettes before recording. Still smokey but not like he needs to clear his throat.
