What's Spinning

The agutierrezb 2019 record collection challenge

So I've decided to embark on my own personal challenge, which consists of listening every record in my collection before the end of the year. My record collection is not that big -only ~250-, but I still feel like there are a bunch of records I don't give enough attention to, while still adding more titles to my shelves.

For this reason I've set a couple of rules in order to play every record at least once before December 31st: I'll play at least one record a day, going from front to back in the way I have them sorted in my shelf. I can play a different record (i.e. Not the next one in alphabetical order) if I feel like listening to something else in any given moment, but at least one of the records I spin in the day has to be the LP in turn.

I didn't take pictures for the first two days, but I'll try to document the process from here on, so I'll be posting daily on this thread. Wish me luck!
#115: Herbie Hancock - Crossings

There are very few artists I have listened to as much as I have listened to Herbie. His recordings with Miles are superb, his Blue Note albums are some of the best the label ever released, and his Headhunters era is super fun and influential. Yet, I feel like his Mwandishi period is often overlooked for how challenging the music can get. It's hard to pick a favorite period in Herbie's career, but this is one I return to very often for how intricate and forward-thinking the recordings are. I wish I had this record on vinyl last year when I saw Billy Hart live, it would have been great if he could have signed it for me, instead of the ticket like he did.

Muriel Grossmann - Reverence

Well, I got home last night after a brutal 19-hour day trip to an oil rig. But I couldn't go straight to bed as this had arrived. Her "Golden Rule" was my favourite of 2018, and as I'm now on my 3rd spin of this already there's every chance she could do it two years in a row. I just love her sax playing, but I feel what elevates this album is the improved playing from her bandmates, in particular the rhythm section.

I think I like this new one better than the first. Total package. Music, musicianship, sound quality, and the vinyl pressing all 1st rate.
